The ALCPT

Introduction:
TheAmerican Language Course Placement Test (ALCPT) is a proficiency test oflistening and reading comprehension in English. It is currently being used bythe UAE Military for promotion purposes as well as selection of militarypersonnel for overseas training.
Descriptionof the test:
Thetest is developed by theUS Defense Language Institute (DLI)and is made up of two parts:
Listeningcomprehension
TheListening comprehension part contains approximately 60 multiple choicequestions and lasts approximately 25 minutes. It is made up of three sections.
1.The first section is concerned withvocabulary - synonyms, antonyms, etc. Candidates hear a question and arerequired to select the best possible answer from the four choices provided. Thispart is made up of approximately 25 questions.

2.The second section tests the candidate'sability to rephrase, reformulate or interpret a recorded statement. Candidatesmust select the best possible answer from the four choices provided. A lot ofthe questions are based on vocabulary. This part is made up of approximately 25questions.

3.The third and last section of thelistening comprehension test consists of dialogues followed by a question. Thequestion is not written in the answer booklet. Candidates must select the bestanswer from among the 4 choices provided. This part is made up of approximately10 questions.

Readingcomprehension
TheReading comprehension part is made up of approximately 40 multiple choicequestions and lasts approximately 25 - 30 minutes. There is only one section tothis part of the test. This part verifies grammar and vocabulary. Most of thequestions are single statements; candidates are not required to read passages.
