Definition: Stream of Consciousness is a literary technique which was pioneered by Dorthy Richardson, Virginia Woolf, and James Joyce. Stream of consciousness is characterized by a flow of thoughts and images, which may not always appear to have a coherent structure or cohesion. The plot line may weave in and out of time and place, carrying the reader through the life span of a character or further along a timeline to incorporate the lives (and thoughts) of characters from other time periods.

Writers who create stream-of-consciousness works of literature focus on the emotional and psychological processes that are taking place in the minds of one or more characters. Important character traits are revealed through an exploration of what is going on in the mind.
The novel enters into the consciousness of the people it takes as it subjects, creating a powerful effect. Woolf’s style of writing which is describe the trivial things of characters; characters daily or ordinary life- still with the stream of consciousness style toward these things, make the readers experiencing the daily life of the characters. It is treated equally with importance. For example the beginning of the novel in which Clarissa feel the morning, opened up the internal process and the character’s mind singing in this prose. Moreover, according to William James, this is flow of conscious experience in the brain.
For the novel point of view, this novel using third person omniscient, the narrator is a voice of a person who knows everything about all characters. The novel uses ‘She’, and ‘He’. This narrator sometimes becomes the subjective thought of the characters. However, the point of view sometimes shifting from one character’s stream of consciousness to another character’s stream of consciousness- within a single paragraph, changes constantly, like montage technique. The example of that part happens when; Septimus got his intense inner conflict and Lucrezia’s fear, then catch a glimpse of the Septimus from another side, from Maisie Johnson’s point of view.

As a conclusion, many experimentalist and outstanding literary techniques can be found in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, especially stream of consciousness style and the novel point of view. The novel use third person omniscient, the narrator is a voice of a person who knows everything about all characters. This narrator sometimes becomes the subjective thought of the characters. However, the point of view sometimes shifting from one character’s stream of consciousness to another character’s stream of consciousness- within a single paragraph. The style of writing is stream of consciousness- which can be said that she is one of many who introduce this style of writing in early 20th century. It reflects the flow of characters interior thought and feeling, which give the reader impression as if they are in the character’s head-with their thought, feeling, emotion and feel like they experienced everything that the character experienced. The novel enters into the consciousness of the people, it takes as it subjects.
The thoughts of characters such as Mrs. Dalloway and Septimus Warren Smith are connected by external events in the world, such as the sound of a motorcar, or the sight of an airplane in the sky, or the sound of the Big Ben clock as it strikes the hour. Woolf shows that the thoughts of individuals can be connected in a way that reveals a unity in human existence, an exciting world of possibility.
