The functions of language
Language is used for more than one purpose. Here are 5 functions of the use of language. First, expressive purpose which is used to express feelings. For example, when a man hits his thumb-nail with a hummer he uses a strange of curses to relief his feelings and needs no audience but himself. Second, playing purpose. People can often be heard playing with language especially for children when they use language as if it were a toy. They repeat, invent and destroy words. The play element is also found in the use of language in some literature. Third, clarifying purpose. For example when philosophers use language to clarify their ideas on a subject. Fourth, strengthen the bonds of cohesion between the members of society- to establish a society relationship-. For instance, when people exchange greetings as they pass one another in the street. Finally, directive purpose. Language is used to give direction to do or not to do something. For example when the instructor orders his students to listen to the lecture.
