مشاهدة النسخة كاملة : Apostrophes – how to use them

Definition
The apostrophe is a raised comma —
like this ( ‘ ).
It is used to show possession and to punctuate contractions.
Examples
Possession- My mother’s house – The girl’s bicycle
The house belongs to my mother – The bicycle belongs to the girl
Contractions- There’s nobody here – Where’s Freddy?
There is nobody here – Where is Freddy?
Many people have problems with the apostrophe. [You're not alone.]
Use
We can write The tail of the dog or The dog’s tail. This is possession – when
something belongs to someone or something.
We can also write It is a lovely day or It’s a lovely day. This is contraction – when two words are merged. The apostrophe is used to denote the missing letter
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Possession
When the possessor is single we indicate possession by using an apostrophe followed by the letter s:
The man’s coat
my sister’s hat
When the possessors are plural, the apostrophe is placed after the final s:
The girls’ bicycles
my cousins’ parents
When names end with the letter ‘s’, either use is acceptable:
James’ wife or
James’s wife
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Contractions
In formal writing we would write She has always loved him, but when speaking we would probably say She’s always loved him. The apostrophe is used to indicate the missing letters (or sounds).
I’m (I am) He’s (He is) You’re (You are)
Notice the difference between it’s (it is) and its (belonging to it).

in a simple way
if after the s, you see a verb in the past, that means surely, has..if there is a noun, sure the s means is

no at all, there comes a time where a person feels like this. However, it should not continue for a longer time. You need to ask about every single piece of information. As the time passes on, bear in mind that learning is never ended

Everything plays a role. Nothing is less than the other, when it comes to a business communication, Grammar plays a very significant part. Actually it has to be balanced somehow. Sometimes, you will be in a very embarrassing situation if you talk or write using a weakened grammar, you will have a lot of problems
May Allah bless you all

There are very few examples about this strage shortening has or have when it means possisson
until now what I found is this is completely uncommon in American English
In British English it's used in the form of "I've a car" but not formally - and I think also not officially
and some say they've found it used in some books
But I didn't find any website talks about shortening has when it is a main verb like your example
like: He's a car
still searching :007:

http://www.1-language.com/englishcourse/unit19_grammar.htm
They both say that shortening have or has when they mean possession is INCORRECT
and there are a lot more sites, but these tow are talking clearer about the issue
and most of the other sites are forums, and I didn't want to use forums to support my opinion
although, British people use the form "I've a car" but only as a slang maybe
But I didn't find any thing that supports the form "He's a car" not even as a slang
and I think the reason is because it's very confusing, see this example:
He's a problem
it could mean:
He has a problem
or
He is a problem
they are completely different from each other

You are right!
especially in the British dialect as I said
and I mentioned that some people say they found it used in some books
but in academic speech, It's incorrect
so "I've a car" can be used sometimes even it is academicly not correct
but "He's a car" is definitely incorrect

May Allah bless you all
You're right, we can get the meaning form the context
but see this sentence
I ain't has not any moneys
we can get the meaning from the context even it's grammatically wrong
The role of grammar is that it helps us to get the meaning from context as easy as it could be
so this sentence which is grammatically right
I do not have money
you get the meaning easily

I think that you know the grammar exactly in English is not very important but speaking

It is right to some extent
It's like saying
It's not important to have a good car
the important is driving well
In my point of view: the more grammar knowledge you get, the more well your language gets, including speaking abilities.

What does mean =he's a car
he told me that he has a car
Cuz it doesn't make any sense when you say that its meaning =he is a car
when you want to make it for him you can say
his car
I told you That I'm not sure 99% But the 1 percent still Glimmer of hope
and if you say
he's not a car
then Problems begin
If you can get the meaning from context, that does not make your sentence correct
I said that to my brother طموح لا ينكسر
like the sentence I wrote
I ain't has not any moneys
in this sentence there is only one meaning, but that does not make it correct
It's still incorrect
