Roland Barthes theory of the author did not emerge out of nothing but in a way it is a continuation of the work of Russian formalist.
The Russian formalists were the first on the 20th century who tried to systematise the studies of literature to make the literary scholarship on autonomous field that works on to generates its own method rather than borrowing them from other field of psychology, sociology, politics or philosophy.
They wanted literary scholarship to be autonomous to specify its fields with precision, because the study of literature was before that not very specific.
Traditional criticism looks at literary works in search of sometimes biographical data of the author or sometimes psychological data about the author or sometimes political, social or philosophical ideas that they extract from the work of literature and the discuss as an attempt to explain the works.
