The thesis statement
is the sentence that tells the main idea of the whole essay. It can be compared to topic sentence. Which gives the main idea of paragraph. It usually comes at or near the end of the interoductory paragraph.

The topic sentence
for each body paragraph should support the thesis statement. The topic sentences need to agree with the main idea or subpoints in the thesis statement; otherwise,the essay could be confusing.
