دراسة عامة عن خصائص الكلام يسمى علم الأصوات وسيكون اهتمامنا بعلم الأصوات المنطوقة
phonetics: the study of the characteristics of speech sounds
علم الأصوات : دراسة خصائص أصوات الكلام
articulatory phonetics: the study of how speech sounds are produced
علم الأصوات النطقية : دراسة كيفية أنتاج أصوات الكلام
acoustic phonetics: the study of the physical properties of speech as sound waves
علم الأصوات الصوتية : دراسة الخصائص الفيزيائية للكلام مثل موجات الصوت.
auditory phonetics: the study of the perception of speech sounds by the ear, also called ‘perceptual phonetics’
علم الأصوات السمعي : دراسة في إدراك أصوات الكلام من قبل الأذن ، كما يدعا أيضا
'' الإدراك اللفظي".
Voiced and voiceless sounds
voiced sounds: speech sounds produced with vibration of the vocal cords
أصوات الكلام المنتجة مع اهتزاز الحبال الصوتية
voiceless sounds: speech sounds produced without vibration of the vocal cords

Bilabials الحروف الشفوية
bilabial: a consonant produced by using both lips (e.g. the first and last sounds in pub)الحرف الشفوي : حرف ساكن ينتج باستخدام الشفتين
تتكون من الحروف التالية [b] [m] [p] [w]

Labiodentals حروف اللثة والأسنان
labiodental: a consonant produced with the upper teeth and the lower lip (e.g. the first sounds in very funny)
خاص بالشفة والأسنان : أنتاج الساكن باستخدام الأسنان العليا والشفة السفلى .
تتكون من الحروف التالية [f] [v]

Dentalsحروف الأسنان
dental: a consonant produced with the tongue tip behind the upper front teeth (e.g. the first sound in that)
الأسنان : حرف ساكن ينتج بواسطة طرف اللسان خلف الأسنان الأمامية العليا
تتكون من الحروف التالية theta [θ] ث , eth [ð] ذ

Alveolars
alveolar: a consonant produced with the front part of the tongue on the alveolar ridge (e.g. the first and last sounds in dot)
اللثة : الحرف ساكن المنتج من الجزء الأمامي من اللسان على حد اللثة
[l] [r] [t], [d], [s], [z], [n]. تتكون من الحروف التالية

Palatals
palatal: a consonant produced by raising the tongue to the palate, also called ‘alveo-palatal’ (e.g. the first sounds in ship and yacht)
صوت الحنك : حروف ساكنة منتجة عن طريق رفع اللسان إلى الجهة الأمامية من الحنك ، وتسمى أيضا 'alveo - حنكي'
تتكون من الحروف التالية sh [ʃ] - ch [tʃ] - [3] - [d3] - [j]
found as the middle consonant sound inwords like treasure and pleasure, or the final sound in rouge [3]
is the initial sound in words like joke and gem. The word judge and the name George both begin and end with the sound [d3]

Velars
velar: a consonant produced by raising the back of the tongue to the velum (e.g. the first and last sounds in geek)
حلقي : حرف ساكن المنتجة عن طريق رفع الجزء الخلفي من اللسان إلى اللهاة
velum: the soft area at the back of the roof of the mouth, also called the ‘soft palate’ اللهاة: المنطقة الناعمة في سقف الفم من الخلف وتسمى الحنك الناعم
[ŋ], [g], [k]. تتكون من الحروف التالية
this sound is normally spelled as the two letters ‘ng’. So, the [ŋ] sound is at the end of sing, sang and despite the spelling, tongue. It occurs twice in the form ringing [ŋ]

Glottals
glottal: a sound produced in the space between the vocal cords (e.g. the first sound in hat) صوت همزة : الصوت المنتج في الفضاء بين الحبال الصوتية
[h]. تتكون من الحروف التالية

the labels −V (= voiceless) and +V (= voiced).

stop: a consonant produced by stopping the air flow, then letting it go, also called ‘plosive’ (e.g. the first and last sounds in cat)
التوقف : أنتاج الحرف الساكن بوقف تدفق الهواء ثم تركه.
[p], [b], [t], [d], [k], [g]

Fricativesالاحتكاكية
fricative: a consonant produced by almost blocking the air flow (e.g. the first and last sounds in five) احتكاكي : حرف ساكن من ينتج بعرقلة تدفق الهواء .
[f], [v], [θ], [ð], [s], [z], [ʃ], [3]

Affricatesالساكنة
affricate: a consonant produced by stopping then releasing the air flow through a narrow opening (e.g. the first and last sounds in church)
الصوت الساكن : حرف ساكن ينتج عن وقف ثم الإفراج عن تدفق الهواء من خلال فتحة ضيقة
[tʃ] , [d3]
Nasals الأنفية
nasal: a sound produced through the nose (e.g. the first sounds in my name) الأنف : صوت المنتجة عن طريق الأنف
[m] , [n] , [ŋ]
Liquidsالسائلة
liquid: a sound produced by letting air flow around the sides of the tongue (e.g. the first sound in lip)
السائل : الصوت الذي ينتج بواسطة السماح بتدفق الهواء حول جانبي اللسان. [l] , [r]

Glidesالانزلاق
glides: sounds produced with the tongue in motion to or from a vowel sound, also called ‘semi-vowels’ or ‘approximants’ (e.g. the first sounds in wet, yes)
الانزلاق : الأصوات المنتجة بواسطة حركة اللسان من وإلى صوت حرف العلة
[w] , [j] , [h]

The glottal stop and the flapصوت الهمزة والرفرفة
هناك نوعان من المصطلحات المستخدمة لوصف طرق نطق الحروف الساكنة وهي ليست مدرجة في التخطيط السابق
glottal stop: a sound produced when the air passing through the glottis is
stopped completely then released
هوت الهمزة : صوت ينتج عند مرور الهواء خلال المزمار يتوقف تماما ثم ينطلق.
glottis: the space between the vocal cords المسافة بين الحبال الصوتية
represented by the symbol [?]

flap: a sound produced with the tongue tip briefly touching the alveolar ridge
It is represented by [D] or sometimes [r]

Vowelsالعلة
vowel: a sound produced through the vocal cords without constriction of the air flow in the mouth
حرف علة : الصوت المنتج من خلال الحبال الصوتية من دون قيود على تدفق الهواء في الفم

Diphthongsالإدغام
diphthong: a sound combination that begins with a vowel and ends with a glide (e.g. boy)
إدغام : الجمع بين الصوت الذي يبدأ مع حرف علة وينتهي بانزلاق
glides [j] or [w].
