An Otherworldly Discovery: Billions of Other Planets .


Astronomers said Wednesday that each of the 100 billion stars in the Milky Way probably has at least one companion planet, on average, adding credence to the notion that planets are as common in the cosmos as grains of sand on the beach.

The finding underscores a fundamental shift in scientific understanding of planetary systems in the cosmos. Our own solar system, considered unique not so long ago, turns out to be just one among billions.

Until April 1994, there was no other known solar system, but the discoveries have slowly mounted since then: The Kepler space telescope, designed for planet-hunting, now finds them routinely.

"Planets are the rule rather than the exception," said lead astronomer Arnaud Cassan at the Institute of Astrophysics in Paris. He led an international team of 42 scientists who spent six years surveying millions of stars at the heart of the Milky Way, in the most comprehensive effort yet to gauge the prevalence of planets in the galaxy.

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. stocks were little changed in early trading after tepid readings on the U.S. labor market and retail sales tempered investor optimism over strong Italian and Spanish debt auctions.

After starting the session with slim gains, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 9 points, or 0.1%, to 12441 Thursday morning. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index gained a fraction to 1293. Both measures reached their highest closing levels since late July earlier this week.

The Nasdaq Composite shed a point to 2710, after notching its fifth consecutive gain on Wednesday, the longest winning streak since mid-October.

Stock futures lost much of their upward momentum before the opening bell, after Labor Department data showed the number of people seeking new unemployment benefits in the U.S. rose more than expected last week.

Initial jobless claims rose to a seasonally adjusted 399,000 in the week ended Jan. 7. That ran against the last few months' trend of a modestly improving labor market. The unemployment rate fell in December to 8.5%, the lowest level since February 2009.

Meanwhile, U.S. retail sales rose only slightly in December, as a surge in auto purchases offset declines in sales of electronics, groceries and gasoline.

"At the start of the new year, it's disappointing to see initial claims increasing," said Andrew Wilkinson, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak. Retail sales also were counter to investors' bullish expectations, he added. "Consumers continue to pay attention to their balance sheets," he said. "We were really looking for a strong end to the year in terms of retail spending."

Microsoft, LG Strike Android Patent Deal

Microsoft said Thursday that it has reached a deal with LG under which the South Korean electronics manufacturer will pay license fees in exchange for Microsoft's pledge not to sue it for using Google's Android and Chrome OS software in its products.
Financial details of the agreement were not revealed. Microsoft has long maintained that certain components of Android and Chrome OS violate its patents, and has struck licensing deals with numerous vendors that use the Google mobile and desktop software in their gadgets.
