Q- What is a sonnet sequence? is it an English genre- is it new or old- is it invented by Sydney?
it is an old form. it was used almost by all the English writers . It is a classical form- writing in sequence- it was used first by Italian and their imitators the French writers. It was copied by the English writers. one of them is Philip Sydney.
Sydney in his sonnet" Astrophil and Stella" he claims that he is going to write something that is not have been written before- that he is going to write something new. But it is just an imitation of others. Even this claiming is an imitation of others. He has put his own spirit in his sonnet sequence. he has his own contribution particularly in" Astrophil and Stella" this is his ability to prop the mind of his own character- the lover- Astrophil. He dramatizes it. It is as if we have a monologue in the mind of the lover.
His own contribution is to prop and to dramatize his characters- mainly Astrophil. We know his feelings , the images he uses, the way he is looking at Stella -as if we are reading a piece of drama.
There are sonnets that are describing Stella's position, her way of thinking, her mind, her heart.
Sonnet sequence has been written many times before Sydney. What is has never been done is his own way of propping and dramatizing his own characters.
Astrophil and Stella" is a sonnet sequence- it is built on the love relationship between Astrophil and Stella- they are Latin
Astrophil is a star lover
Stella is a star
"Astrophil and Stella" is the star and star lover.
She is away, unreachable, shinning , glittering, attractive He is suffering, trying to reach her.
The mood is not Italian.
There is a relation between man and nature.
Star is nature- honest, clear.
To give the English mood, Sydney makes Stella not loyal.
He is in lover with this star, but this star as being shinning, attractive is being married some one else.
Sydney uses puns in the sonnet= playing with words.
Stella is in love with him. He expresses his love to her, but this lady is married by some one else. This man's name is Mr. Rich. She does not evaluate his love. She is not loyal enough. She believes that she deserves something better than him so she is married to someone else.
Sydney plays on the word Rich- it is the name of her husband. It also means that he is being wealthy. She prefers money to him. Her husband is rich in money, but not rich in conduct or personality. She is married to this man to be rich, but in fact she is poor. She is a materialistic lady. She prefers money.
He starts by writing his own intention as a writer, a poet and a lover. he says that he is writing something for this lady to make her emotions moved, to move her emotions, not to bring her back to him, but to torture her as a revenge. He will write something very good so that she will read. When she reads, she will be moved. when she moves, she will feel pain, ill suffer.
Before he writes, he will read other writers of poetry that he can find images, lines, metaphors that he can borrow and put in his poetry to strengthen it, to write influential lines.
At the beginning, he wants to write this because he is under the heat of love. His head is like a sunburned land. There is nothing. There is no flower to grow. He has no idea. This is one of the most important images in the first sonnets.
He will read other poems, borrow from it to create a good poem. Then he came to the conclusion that he has to write his own feelings. Borrowing from others is not a good decision. He has to say his own words, uses his own heart to write his own life.
He plays with this. He is maneuvering with certain images. He gives a clear image of his own task as a lover writing poetry.
Read your Anthology- a paragraph about "Astrophil Stella "
It is the first good sonnet cycle- sequence. It is considered to be one of the best.
It deals with a love story. It deals with trite feelings. it starts with the beauty of the lady, being attracted to the beauty of the lady, falling in love and being tortured. There is nothing new.
He saw the lady. It happens that she is, like a star- well known- beautiful- highly educated- wealthy- he falls no love. he is tortured, there is no resolution. this theme is being repeated in all the sonnet sequence.
What directs our own attention to the poem whether it is Italian or English is the resolution. The Italian resolution is to stat content , satisfied and do nothing, escaping to the beloved. In the English resolution, the lover rejects and chooses something better to do- escaping from the beloved.

اقتباس:
the speaker is rejecting his love. The speaker is in love but he is in control of his love. He enjoys this feeling- the importance of controlling his emotions, controlling his own life, the importance of searching for something better than love.
Seneca and Plato are calling him to search for something good to do, to educate himself.
we come to the conclusion that this sonnet is completely of English mood- the lover is rejecting his love, searching for something good to do and never being satisfied of this slave-master relationship. He refuses to be a slave of this master. He is speaking of his love as being nonsense. it is the business of young hearts.
He believes in love. He speaks of Cupid. He knows that Cupid has hit his heart. It is true that he is in love but he is not weak to submit his life to his master. He rejects and resists. He believes that he has something better than being satisfied, content, submitting his life to his love.
He conveys this mood through images.
He refers to a very nice metaphor before speaking about Cupid itself.
Thy baited hooks shall tangle me no more.
He has been entangled. He is like a fish, but this hook can not catch him. He won't be caught be this hook, he won’t be entangled. He is not trapped there.
Then he starts to assure that he is not going to fall in this relation. He speaks of educating himself. He thinks that he has a better vocation in his life. At the same time, he believes that cupid will try his heart. He is dismissing cupid. He asks him to go and trouble other hearts. He is the master.
The main difference between the two sonnets is that in this sonnet, he is the master of his own life. He can control his life.
In the first sonnet, he is the slave of his lady.
He concludes this sonnet with a very important image
For, hitherto though I have lost my time,
Me list no longer rotten boughs to clime.
He says that although he has lost all his time in nonsense- this feeling of love, it is the right time to have a decision. His decision is not to climb this rotten bough- tree- that is love.
In this sonnet, we have the image of a tree that won't be climbed. In the first sonnet, we have the image of the forest.
The image of trees, entanglement is there in both sonnets. But the using of these two images is different. In the first sonnet, he is running to the forest and hiding in it. In this sonnet, he says that he will never climb this tree. It shows his resistance.
In both poems, there is the image of the trees. But in the first one, he is escaping to this tree. in the second one, he is escaping from this tree. He is describing it as rotten. He believes that it is better not to climb this tree and to make himself busy with education. He knows that he may fall under the influence of love. He appreciates the power of love to change his life. He thinks that it is a negative influence, negative change.
At that time, under the general thematic line of all the poems, he knows that this type of relationship during this age was a waste of time. The lover is always neglected, suffering, entangled in the problems of a lover's life.
