You support your main idea by explaining it, describing it, defining it, or otherwise giving information about it. You will usually need to actually look up or research this information. When you are writing an essay or report, each paragraph after the introduction should discuss one supporting detail. Depending on how many paragraphs you want to include, you can have any number of supporting details. 4 The parts of speech explains the ways words can be used in various contexts. Every word in the English language functions as at least one part of speech; many words can serve, at different times, as two or more parts of speech, depending on the context. 5 Reading and learning new words is about finding meaning and use within the passage. Discover the meaning of a word you don't know by ferreting out context clues within the text.Vocabulary Building and Reading Comprehension The meaning of unknown words which you come across in your reading sometimes can be known by their surroundings, that is, their contexts. The context of the sentence can tell us the part of speech of the unknown word. Using the context of the paragraph to define unknown words can also helpful. Although it takes practice, it is the easiest and most efficient way to identify words. Often, using the context is the only way to figure out the meaning of the word as it is used in the sentence, passage, or chapter. Consider the word "car". Car is a common word. But without surrounding words, you don't know if it describes soap, a place that serves car ,need a fule to work. 6 A prefix is a group of letters added before a word or base to alter its meaning and form a new word. In contrast, a suffix is a group of letters added after a word or base. This page contains free worksheets, online activities and other educational resources to help with prefixes and suffixes. anti- de- dis- ex- mis- -ly pre- re- un- -ful -less Exmaples : Refix , refresh, declose, pretype 7 able, ible=capable of(adjective suffix) ac, ic = like, pertaining to acious, icious= full of al = pertaining to ant, ent = full of ary =like, connected with ate to make = (verb suffix) 8 One cause can lead to more than one effect, for example heavy rain can cause landslides and flooding. Also, more than one cause can lead to one or more effects, for example, eating too much pizza and drinking too much coke for lunch can cause you to get fat and be late for class! It was snowing outside so school was canceled. |
