هذا هو بس طبعا من النت بس حسيته كويس

Dialogue between soul and the body.
The professor started the lecture welcoming the students saying that she wanted them to answer some questions.
Students said that since the knowledge the knew before were just facts, they doubted every thing and started to think reasonably about politics and religious scene.
- One of the students going to summarize the poem.
-Another student stood up and talked about the middle class in that time and how did they start to have money.
- A third student spoke about the social life of the people at that time and how different it was from the people in our modern life now days.
So, we need to talk about the social life at that time where every thing was, and that everything was totally separate in the society and the need of money that started to encourage people to be members of the parliament , as long as pushing the children to be educated to have a better life all of those aspects created a better environment for progress in life.
We always hear that someone is really talented in poetry like El-Motanbea or William Shakespeare.etc. of course that was not just for one aspect, but lots of aspects came together and made them up like social life, family, politics, money and so on.
Andrew Marvell wrote his poetry during the civil war in England in 1960 that shaped his character and he grew up at this time.
On of the students commented that he wanted to express himself and his background.
- The civil war was a political action that affected everyone at that time. Lots of people were killed while other were executed, so he learned to hide his ideas and thoughts between the lines and never mention them directly in order to save his life and this was the reason when you need his poems to give you an opinion out of his poems you will not find it obvious. There is something needed to be discussed that is he wrote many poems depending on this kind of behavior.

The Title
The title talks about the conflict between the body and the soul. He used a very complicated image to prove his own points of view. Second, he learned to a lot from John Milton and John Done. He learned a lot from both of them and they affected him a lot as both of them were very rich.
The poem was all about the conflict between the body and the soul and it is considered not to be a great poet at that time but after T.S Eliot’s new school of criticism came out they considered him a great poet. His body can’t see that his soul is locked up and chained inside his body.
The professor started to read the first stanza and explained that the body is not a pleasant place for his soul to stay in and his soul wanted to isolate and live somewhere else.
When you ask and answer in a poem like that is full of argument that enriched the poem a lot and the argument means that the body wants to save his soul but the soul can’t tolerate the place she lives in. as it can’t not endure the painful life it has.
The body answered the soul is not the only one who suffers I am also suffering and being tortured.
So again if you ask and answer a poem this is called an argument that helps to enrich the poem and make it interesting.
The body and the soul are tortured by each other .the body is asking who can free the soul out of the body to give some rest for that injured body .and the soul is asking how long does it take to be released out of that body. So, it needs to take an action to leave that body through the passion.
The body still describing the pain and even wants to die to get red of that unacceptable pain because the soul is pushing him to death. ” You want me to die in order to live”
That means it asks do you want me to live or die. I’m really confused. It can’t rest as long as this ill-spirit soul is living inside him. so, who has been tortured the soul or the body? The answer is ctually both.
Then the soul talked again and said that it can feel the pain every time the body feels it. When the body complains the soul feels it physically and mentally. The soul was affected by the body as the body was affected by the soul. The body could die by illness and the soul could die by depression
The soul said that it put all the efforts to save the body which destroyed it by torture and pain, but it will help it anyway to stay alive even if it pains me. I will take the pain to cure it and when it cures I know it will pain me again.
The body complained that the soul keeps complaining on him when it was ill but it is also sick and there is no cure for the soul when it is sick. So, who Is more painful to the other?

The Subject Matter
1-The whole poem is a debate between the body and the soul.
2- The poet broke himself to be a body and a soul and started debating that both of them is hurting the other while it is suffering at the same time. And that happens whenever the soul wants to control the body and the body wants to stretch itself in any direction
- It is a great poem teaches us how to express ourselves freely and lots of other lessons.
- If the soul would win the body would suffer and it will behave like a human being, and if the body could win the soul was going to be like an animal. That is why both of them should live in harmony and balance.
- Here lies the political conflict which was mentioned but as we said before it was hidden between the lines of the poem. The soul represents the human life which is imprisoned inside the body which represents the political life.
- The soul accused the body first and then the body accused it back.
What is the different between the Subject Matter and the theme?
The Subject Matter gives you an idea about the whole poem while the Theme talks about the topics inside the poem.
The last Stanza talks about the love of live and that human soul without a body is nothing.
The idea or the theme is that we must live in harmony and combine the soul with the body in order to have a good live.
Finally if we compare between Andrew Marvell and John Done we can say that Done could reflect his ideas clearly and directly while Marvell had to hide them between the lines.
Andrew Marvel A Dialogue between the soul and body
In “A Dialogue between the Soul and Body” Andrew Marvell portrays the battle that is waged in every man between his fleshly desires and his spiritual side. Although the soul and the body are mutually dependent, they are not portrayed as a harmonious team but as bitter enemies locked in an anguished debate. The body resents the control of the soul and the soul feels constrained by the body. The clever use of imagery and personification within the illusion of a debate powerfully communicates the unique frustration and anguish experienced by the combatants in this irresolvable conflict.

The opposing arguments are organised into a profoundly patterned poem. The poem is patterned into four stanzas containing end line rhyming couplets. With each line made up of eight syllables featuring mainly strong or masculine end line rhymes. The first three stanzas are made up of five couplets and begin with a rhetorical question, a device commonly used in debating. The opposing arguments are put forward in paired stanzas adding to the impression of a debate. The use of personification, by giving a voice to the soul and the body, dramatically strengthens this impression. The fourth stanza, made up of seven couplets, challenges the

The soul’s frustration at being confined is very skillfully conveyed by using the fleshly aspects of the body to portray its spiritual constraint. The soul cries “With bolts of Bones, that fetter’d stands / In feet; and manacled in Hands”. Things that are very enabling for the body, feet for mobility and hands for touch, are described by the soul as very constraining and a cause of its suffering. The other devices used to constrain the soul are also fleshly parts of the body.

The first two stanzas are paired with the opposing arguments concerning physical aspects and offer a metaphorical description of each one’s suffering. The soul has been given the first opportunity to put forward its argument and asks its rhetorical question “O, Who shall from this dungeon raise / A soul enslaved so many ways?” REF Powerful imagery is used in the remainder of the stanza to convey the soul’s feelings of imprisonment and torture. The use of the words dungeon, inslaved, fettered, manacled, chains and tortured creates an explicit image of suffering. When the body speaks it opposes the soul with it s own rhetorical question “ O, Who shall me deliver whole, / From bonds of this tyrannic soul?” REF The image of the body being controlled by the soul is cleverly illustrated with the assistance of words like deliver, bonds, tyrannic, impales and precipice.. The opposing arguments put forward by the soul and the body in the first two stanzas clearly indicate the contrast between the senses and desires of the flesh and the spirit. The suffering experienced by each during their struggle is expressed using strong physical imagery.

The dialogue form
The dialogue is a form of poetry which is not often used. However, Marvell did write several: A Dialogue between the Resolved Soul and Created Pleasure; Clorinda and Damon; Ametas and Thestylis are other examples, the first like this one, a moral debate; the other two, pastoral poems with some religious significance. It is best to see this dialogue as being like a first class cricket match. Both sides get two innings, alternately. At the end, we have to declare the match drawn. Marvell, though clearly favoring the Soul, does not give either side the match-winning argument.
Soul says
The soul opens the batting with a powerful complaint: it is not only being imprisoned in the body, but tortured by it. The image of the soul being imprisoned is typically Platonic. Its move is to escape through the death of the body. Marvell plays with several parts of this extended conceit: ‘blinded with an Eye’ makes a nice paradox. The organs of sense blind (and bind) the soul to heaven, keeping it bound to sense impressions. Blinding was a common form of torture, as was constant sound. The worst part is ‘a vain head’, meaning stuffed with idle, fruitless thoughts, and a ‘double Heart’, because divided.
Body replies
The body is not too well pleased with this onslaught, and accuses the soul of driving it around, when all it wants is a quiet life. It even has to get up and walk upright! (‘mine own Precipice I go’). The soul makes it restless with its own restlessness. It feels possessed by ‘this ill spirit’.
Soul’s response
The soul's response is to enlarge on the ‘double Heart’. It has its own grief through being trapped in the body and has to bear the body's grief as well. We might say in modern terms, the soul here is both the psychology and the spirituality of human existence: the psychology derives from the body; the spirituality, from its heavenly origins. Left to itself, it would escape the body by letting it die; but the body's concern is to keep itself alive, and the soul is forced to help it do that. Again, Marvell makes the most of this paradox in his imagery: ‘Shipwreck into health again’; ‘what worse, the cure’.
Body concludes
The body is allowed its second innings. It lists the psychological suffering the soul forces on it through hope, fear, love, hatred and so on. The list goes on through the whole stanza. It climaxes with the paradox:
What but a Soul could have the wit
To build me up for Sin so fit?
Only the soul has given it the consciousness of sin. Left to itself, it would live like the animals in instinctive, undifferentiated being. The final image is one that Marvell was to take up several times in his ‘Mower’ poems: the body is like an undifferentiated tree growing naturally; the soul like an architect (or topiary gardener, as we might say), which trims and prunes it into all kinds of outlandish and unnatural shapes.
The key question
The final question is a real dilemma, then: Marvell has been working slowly towards it. Do human beings live ‘as Nature intended’, however shapeless that life might be morally or intellectually? Or do we raise ourselves through, allowing our ‘souls’ or spirits to restrain and shape our lives according to some overall design? Marvell does not push through to the soul's early conclusion: its wish for death as escape. He recognises life is something that has to be accepted, however problematic it is.
Investigating A Dialogue between Soul and Body
• Read through A Dialogue between the Soul and Body
o Pick out some of the images and work them out
• Compare Marvell's Platonism here with that of Vaughan in his Ascension - Hymn
o What are the differences in the way they express their desire to escape earthly existence?
• What is metaphysical about this poem?
• Compare Marvell's attitude to the body to Donne's.
