هذي الاسئله

Q-1- How is the play impressionistic?

Impressionism is a movement in the arts during the early part of the 20th century that emphasized subjective expression of the artist's inner experiences.
It is part of aestheticism so the writer wants to convey his point of view not caring about the audience. Impressionistic drama usually shows an ideal point of view. The writer creates a dreamlike atmosphere, illogical, he does not care what the audience think
Impressionism is unrealistic. If we look at the background , we will find that it is impressionistic because of the influence of Henrik Ibsen.
when Oscar Wilde promotes Lady Windermere's fan, he rebelled against Victorian principles. He preached the importance of style in both life and art, and he attached Victorian narrow-mindedness and complacency.Oscar Wilde denied the traditional criterions of the bourgeois ethics. He thought that the only moral value was the ideal of beauty in nature and in person. However, he said that beauty was not the reflection of realistic life in the people’s minds, but contrary, it was just the product of artist’s imagination. That is why he confirmed that art was existing independent of the life and was developing according to its own laws. He was known as a poet of graceful diction.
Oscar Wilde has contributed his most important work to the theatre: “Lady Windermere’s Fan” (1892. it had a success without precedent, it must be said that it is constructed with extraordinary skill; it is interesting for its setting, pathetic without evoking tears, witty to the point of excess, and written in a pure literary language. In this play, Wilde brings together the social intrigues and the witticism. “
this play is what one could call society play, picture of fashionable life in which an unmistakable air of reality is happily wedded to playful satire. The greatest merit is its dialogue. In other words, Oscar Wilde did not dive very deeply below the surface of human nature. But found to a certain extent rightly, that there is more on the surface of life then is seen by the eyes of most people. He believed as much in veneer as in deep untarnishable colour. And as in the drama surface is likely to please while depth of colour is often productive of dullness, he preferred to concentrate his insight of the language rather then on the underline humanity of his place. In this he proved he knew himself for lightness of touch, not to say a certain flippancy, was a paramount feature of his gifted nature; and when he was all gaiety, sardonism, and persiflage,
O.Wilde’s plays were written in a light satirical vein, cultured and refined, and in good taste. His characters served as the mouths to pronounce the author’s exquisitely funny remarks on society. The remarks of the cynical young men about life, love and society and the talkative Duchess of Berwick, may show a keen appreciation of the vices of the upper-class society.
Surely a good moral woman, such as Lady Windermere is made out to be, would not desert her husband because of the mere gossip of a scandal-mongering old lady. Lord Windermere also would never have allowed matters to come to a crisis without taking his wife into confidence and explaining to her a little sooner his relationship with Mrs. Erlynne. But this is not Mr. Wilde’s idea. He was anxious to express to the world his reflections on things in general, to lash the pretty vices of people of fashion, and did not, in the least, wish to tell a good story. So, the plot does not matter, as the whole interest lies in the conversation, which is as if many Wildes, male and female, were talking together. The dialogue is exquisitely funny and successful. It is satirical without being aggravating to audience. It is beating, and at the same time genial and good-humoured. It is an original, clever and ridiculous piece portraying London society as it is seen through the spectacles of Mr. Oscar Wilde.
Oscar Wilde’s characters are the people of high society. He gives some typical features to his characters, but refuses the most famous way of that time to settle accounts with the enemies through the literary characters. Wilde’s heroes have no prototypes in real life. He named them by places’ titles where he worked writing these comedies. The moral conflict structure of Wilde’s plays is usually presented by means of action suspense. The first act of “Lady Windermere’s Fan” is almost all consisting of the saloon talks. But Wilde considers it to be the perfect act. These talks are full of witty fights with the help of wonderful epigrams. Oscar Wilde tried to create the fame of the great aesthete. His speech was full of paradoxical judgments.

( this part is from the lectures)

In the 19th century, Queen Victoria ruled England. She was a young queen, she was nice and beautiful, she was raised by her German mother .German people are very tough. She grew up to be a puritan .when she ruled England, she was young and all the people around her showed her social respectability, they loved her. they always tried to keep good manners in front of her to please her . She was very strict and she lacked intellectual flexibility. She was narrow minded, and she started to spread her believes .Most of the people follow her rules. People follow the Victorian principles to conform to the social norms of the society. Victorianism spread through the whole of Europe, the Victorian ideals created hypocrisy in the society. Several people started to act against their nature to be accepted in the society . they started to hide their real nature, and Oscar Wilde in his play Lady Windermere's Fan he criticized those principles and he showed that the puritans are narrow minded. he does not say queen Victoria is narrow minded .he makes lady Windermere in the beginning of the play confesses that she is a Puritan .we have implicit ideas. His criticism is not harsh because he is an aesthete. He wants to express his point of you and he does not care if the audience accept his point of view . this shows that he is also an impressionist .
Impressionistic writer can experiment space. he can give an impression of a hyperspace
In this play we will find impressionistic style.
The protagonist says a long monologue and he talks about subjective, about his own self and objective reality, something related to the society.
Oscar wild's play Lady Windermere's Fan is not totally impressionistic. He is influenced by Henrik Ibsen and Pinero . They mix experimentation and realism. Oscar Wilde also
mixes experimentation with impressionism . Good plays are those that refer to local events( in the society) and through locality the writer reaches universality .

For impressionism, silence is technique, symbolism, experimentation means anti- realistic . In Impressionism, characters make illogical reaction. We can find Hedonist or bohemian characters. We can find dreamlike atmosphere, symbols . in Lady Windermere's Fan, the fan is a symbol . We have the sense of quit. We see Mrs. Erlynne who left her daughter for 20 years. She wants to save her. She wants to expiate her sin. We have the use of the idealistic sense. We find Pure friendship and sacrifice .
Mrs. Erlynne saves her daughter from the social disgrace taking the offence on herself. It is the decisive point in the play determining the end. While she saves her daughter and her marriage she sacrifices herself being degraded and disgraced in eyes of the men in dandy Lord Darlington’s room at that moment.
Mrs. Erlynne dismisses with the observation that life is a sacrament; its ideal is love and its purification is sacrifice. The charge of the Duchess is supported when Lady Windermere finds, in a secret account book of her husband's, a record of large sums given to Mrs. Erlynne .
The plot of the playis improper to happen. It is anti-realistic, make like dream – like atmosphere ( you can write the plot in brief)
Miss Alent after 20 years, she read news about her daughter marriage with rich man then she goes and tries to take money from the husband.
Margaret's house can be extended to look like a hyperspace. The audience would imagine hundreds of guests fitting into the hall during her birthday party.
Oscar Wilde has a subjective point of view. He uses characters as mouthpieces to show his impression of a situation in life. Lord Darlington is reflecting Oscar Wilde. Oscar wild was a dandy, and lord Darlington is also a dandy who does not care about the social norms of the society.

Personal desires are described but not shown on stage OSCAR Wilde’s play is highlighting an abundance of repressed desires including jealousy, envy, love, temptation and deceit.. Impressionist drama is decent. Awful manners are very bad but not shown on stage. obscene details are not shown but implied or blared in the text.
The play conveys the writer's idealistic hedonist vision. He shows what society considers ugliness as beautifulness.
Oscar Wilde was one of the Victorian aesthetes and tried to write the work that should be beautiful in its colour and cadence. His writing is highly wrought. Despite the fact that O.Wilde has probably been written about more than most nineteenth-century writers, his place and reputation continue to be uncertain.
(Here, you can add the features of the play as a well made play)

Q-2- symbolist
Symbolism is a 19th-century artistic movement rejecting Realism. a symbol is Any object, person, place or action that has both a meaning in itself and that stands for something larger than itself, such as an idea, belief or value
the use of any of certain special figures or marks of identification to signify a religious message or divine being, as the cross for Christ and the Christian faith.
A symbolist play evokes rather than disguise, by suggesting the writer's idealistic view point
The symbolist writer uses symbols that give gloomy atmosphere. The aesthetes believe that they can show what is scary becomes beautiful.
The aesthetes use symbols that do not show the details, because they are not naturalists. They blur the physical details, and this is not because of morals. they do not care about morals but because showing details have something to do with naturalist hedonism , they are concerned with spiritual hedonism .
There is always a cycle of deep redemption the character either sacrifices himself or scapegoats others.
In typical Wildean style, Lady Windermere's Fan is a means for Wilde to expose the lives of the aristocrats and other wealthy Londoners for what they really were: Shallow and superficial.
In Lady Windermere's Fan it is arguable that the fan is characteristic of Lady Windermere's behavior as a female, and as a woman that feels betrayed. The fan itself represents her husband's fondness (it was his birthday gift for her), her superior status above Mrs. Cheveley (she held the fan in contempt as she waited for her), her flirtation with Lord Goring (she flirted with Goring using the "fan language"), her want for revenge (she was ready to beat up Mrs. Cheveley with her fan), her passiveness, and her aggressiveness, all at the same time.
Comparatively, Lady Windermere's rival, Mrs. Cheveley, also has a symbol of her own which represents several aspects of her personality: The diamond brooch.
The diamond brooch with ruby eyes represents the betrayer and the enemy in the symbolic form of a snake. Not only does the snake brooch reflect Mrs. Cheveley's cunning ways, but it also symbolizes her shady past, since she had stolen that brooch. When Lord Goring recognizes the brooch he points out to Mrs. Cheveley that it also can be used as a cuff bracelet (reminiscent of the cuffs used by police). This is how he confronted her, thus trapping her into his knowledge so that she would not go try to ruin Lord Windermere.
In conclusion, the two female main characters had symbols that represented their behaviors as well as their diverse roles within the play.

The fan in the title can refer to both the physical object - which Lord Windermere buys for her as a 21st birthday present - and to her admirer, Lord Darlington - who pays her deeply flattering compliments and eventually reveals his love for her.

in Lady Windermere's Fan The fan is a symbol. It is an extravagant useless toy used by aristocratic ladies . It is full of secrets.
The scenery of the play is expected to be gloomy and scary but at the same time beautiful.
As a symbolist play, it involves a dream like gloomy plot which highlights a sad situation.
We also can find elements of grotesquery. the fan is a grotesque figure in the play
The play expresses a guilt- redemption cycle. The play offers an uneasy mix of Wilde’s amoral wit and pleadings for Christian forgiveness. Unusually, Wilde resolves the moral complications of the play by having his characters maintain two distinct secrets.
The true biological nature of Lady Windermere’s relationship to Mrs Erlynne is kept from her, at Mrs Erlynne’s insistence. Lord Windermere is protected from the knowledge that his wife intended to run off with Lord Darlington, prompted by the mere suspicion that her husband had been unfaithful. This deception is also the creation of Mrs Erlynne.

Q-3- discuss a well-made play
The tradition of the well-made play emerged towards the end of the nineteenth century. It was also called piece bien faite meaning ‘Second Empire Drama’. It was supported mainly by the works of Eugene Scribe , of Dumas , of Emile Augier , and of Victorien Sardou. The tradition reached to the top with Sardou’s works in which the techniques of construction invented by Scribe were completely used. Construction and stagecraft are exploited fully rather than the characterization and ideas . In the plot counstruction of the well-made play , an action turns on artificial complications that are easily solved by ingenious solutions . It is the stage of which the salon or the drawing room has double doors at the side entrances. It begins with an exposition setting the scene stating where the characters stand in the scene in detail. The problem in the play is revealed at the heart of it where there can be a sudden change. Eventually, the play ends happily and agreeably

As a well-known type of play , it predominated the French theatre and later was dominant in the theatre of Europe. The London stage was in many respects like an extension of the Paris theatre and flourished by the play of this type making imitations, adaptations and translations of the French drama . Moreover , the well-made drama was replaced in the Romantic plays such as Shelley’s Cenci and Byron’s Manfred .Besides this, it succeeded the extravagant farces, crude melodramas and spectacle plays which were the public entertainment for the people in the middle of the nineteenth century. It was better than the romantic play and the other types as a neatly organized and compact play of situation. The well-made play , also called as play of situation , treated serious issues although they were handled as secondary to the plot. As a result , treatment remained blurred and vague due to the necessities of the plot, Another property of the well-made drama was that it made the characters superficial and two dimensional types subordinate to the plot. All the characters were like puppets in the service of the plot and the representatives of their time criticizing the institutions and social patterns. They were a kind of conventional type such as Mrs Erlynne who is a woman with an unknown past and some facile virtues and Lady Windermere who is a rigid and conservative puritanical lady. As the well-made play did not treat the characters and the issues completely and deeply , they were left inconsistent and undeveloped . The play of situation pointed at drawing attention the spectator , not only to the character but also , the action and the behaviors that the character will do next .1 For instance ,when the men come to Darlington rooms , what will Lady Windermere and Mrs. Erlynne do? What will they do , when they see the mislaid fan? What will do Lord Augustus when she was Mrs. Erlynne under the curtained.

Lady Windermere’s Fan by Oscar Wilde ,which was his first success in the theatre and a comedy of social class , is set in the plot construction of the tradition of the well-made play. The plot of the play is constructed in the ‘exposition’ , ‘crisis’ rising through the complication caused by devices and solved easily and ‘denoument’. In Lady Windermere’s Fan as in Wilde’s other plays not only these elements such as devices , complications and solutions are used , but also unities of time and place are limited in the plot emphasizing a single dramatic action. The unity of time is underlined in the synopsis of the scenes of the play : ‘The action of the play takes place within twenty-four hours , beginning on a Tuesday afternoon at five o’clock and ending the next day at 1.30 p.m.’ In such a short time , the relation between Mrs. Erlynne and Lord Windermere which rumored for six months suddenly emerged as a scandal. Within these few hours a happy marriage which has eventually been saved would be broken .

The action of the play progresses so rapidly due to the limited time in the play. The technique of the well-made play requires wasting a little time on exposition passing over it quickly and superficially because the dramatic situation and suspense are underscored in the play. Thus , we can not have any information about Mrs. Erlynne’s past life, Because of this , the Duchess of Berwick who likes gossiping does not know much about Mrs. Erlynne in such a small circle of society. Due to the absence of some information in the exposition, we can not understand why Mrs. Erlynne’s appearance is so different from what it was twenty years ago. Even Lady Windermere does not find some likeness with her mother’s picture and the coincidence of their names, Margaret, does not make awaken her feeling and perception. Although these curiosities make some exposition necessary for the plot, such issues are ignored without exploiting them in well-made plot construction's In the exposition part , it is just prepared ground for the dramatic situation that is Lady Windermere’s being informed of the rumored affair between her husband and Mrs. Erlynne who is her mother.

The plot construction of the well-made play bases on the use of the standard devices in order to bring about complications which are untied by some facile solutions. The miscarried or intercepted letter , the mislaid object are the conventional devices used chiefly in this type of play causing the complication.

The cheque- book of Lord Windermere proving that he gave a great deal of money to Mrs Erlynne and found by Lady Windermere is the first device leading to complication in the play. She does not believe her husband’s explanation feeling sure about her suspicion and threatens to strike Mrs. Erlynne with her fan if she comes to her birthday party. Although Lord Windermere can not convince his wife’s curiosity about cheque-book and his relation with Mrs. Erlynne , she can not dare do anything towards Mrs. Erlynne which will cause a scandal due to her high breeding as an upper-class lady.

The farewell note that Lady Windermere wrote in exasperation and frustration to her husband but intercepted by Mrs. Erlynne is another device revealing Mrs. Erlynne maternity. For the first time we learn that she is the mother of Lady Windermere in Act II.

‘Thanks ! What can I do? What can I do?
I feel a passion awakening within me that I never felt before. What can it mean? The daughter must not be like the mother – that would be terrible. How can I save her? How can I save my child?’

(Lady Windermere’s Fan- Act II. )
Mrs. Erlynne shows a maternal protectiveness towards her daughter in her behaviors and remarks. Suddenly she follows her daughter to save her from the similar ignominy. However, they are obliged to hide in the room as the men come Darlington’s rooms with together. The complication to which the farewell note leads is solved in behalf of Lord Windermere and Lady Windermere because it does not cause any complication between them.

Lady Windermere’s mislaid fan which the play centers around is the most significant device causing the crisis in the play. At the beginning of the play while it seems innocent birthday present from a husband to a wife ,it turns into an incriminating object which may break a marriage and cause a tragedy between two men. However, Mrs. Erlynne saves her daughter from the social disgrace taking the offence on herself. It is the decisive point in the play determining the end. While she saves her daughter and her marriage she sacrifices herself being degraded and disgraced in eyes of the men in dandy Lord Darlington’s room at that moment.

Takes fan from him, Lord Windermere looks at her in contempt
( Lord Darlington in mingled astonishment and anger) Lord Augustus turns away. The other men smile at each other(.

(Lady Windermere's Fan , act III. )

In the end of the play ,presenting some excuses to Lord Augustus who feels like jilted and deluded male ,she repairs his broken heart.

As the curtain descends , every complications are solved agreeably and neatly. However, Lady Windermere's suspense about Mrs Erlynne identity is not resolved in the end of the play. She just knows her as a good woman who rescues her making a great flaw. When she learns that they will get married with Mrs Erylnne ,she tells Lord Augustus that:

(Taking her husband’s hand) Ah, you’re

marrying a very good woman !

( Lady Windermere’s Fan, Act IV.

‘The Windermere's flourish in a new and harmonious intimacy's . Mrs. Erlynne bids farewell to her daughter leaving her unaware of her true identity and starts a new life with Lord Augustus planning to go somewhere else to live together. Thus, everything becomes normal as in the beginning of the play ending in an agreeable atmosphere
