William Blake

William Blake was born in 1787 and died in 1827. His most famous works are:
· Songs of Innocence-
· Songs of Experience.”
He has his own mental, psychological characteristics in his poetry. He has his own vision, his own way of expressing himself, speaking of his art.
He spoke of himself as having this special relation with the universe, the holy power. He said that when he was 4 years old, he saw god looking at him from a window. He believed that his own poetry is being dedicated, revealed to him from heavens. He had his own practices in life as a painter and engraver and a poet as the same time. He wanted to have the experience to the full. He believes that everything is holy. He believed in the holiness of every living thing in nature. He wants to keep the zest of life, to keep the flower of glory within us. As a human being, we enjoy glory and holiness. He wrote poetry in which he showed his vision of the society. He was writing poetry showing his keen observation of his own nation and society. He had his own religious views. In his poetry, we find criticism of politics, educational system for abusing, misusing children, religious system and the churchmen. He is defending children, attacking the guardians of the children- the charity schools. It was a practice by the church, allowed by the educational system. It was the responsibility of the educational system and the religious system. This manipulation of the children was an act taken by the church. He was against the education, political, religious system. He spoke of children working in the factories. He was not satisfied with these different systems in his country. He had his keen observation of his own age. He had the ability to criticize. He is showing directly the defects, drawing the attention to fix these defects. He was writing under the influence of French Revolution. It started in France, took sometime to come to England. It brought changes to the romantics especially with the human rights= the right of man to express himself, to be protected, to have the right to be educated , to live a better life in his country, equality of men, trying to break down these social divisions.
He started observing and writing on the needs of his own society. One of the main issues was the situation of the children, the life they were leading, the circumstances within which these children were living, the treatment the children were receiving. He is frankly, attacking, criticizing, trying to correct, and trying to attract the attention of people. He is calling for the healing of the child. The child is a key word for the Romantics, besides imagination- nature. Child for the Romantics is the father of man.
Blake while criticizing the charity school, he is criticizing the church. The church men were using and abusing children for their propaganda.
This poem is written among a collection of poems called” Songs of Innocence and songs of Experience” it is one collection, but it is divided into three groups.
** Holy Thursday- in Songs of Experience , Songs of Innocence, we are going to study- the Sick Rose- under the Songs of Experience
Before reading William Blake, we have to know that he has developed a number of symbols in his poetry. These symbols are very important to understand his poetry. These symbols are- the child- Father- Christ each one stands for one stage. Human soul for him passes through these three stages. Stage number one is innocence. Stage number 2 is stage of experience, that is why he wrote songs of innocence and experience. the third stage is the stage of higher innocence. These three symbols stand for these three stages.
ý Innocence= child
ý Experience= father
ý Higher innocence=Christ
These are not physical stages. The elements of each stage are to be found in the next stage. In the stage of experience, we find elements of innocence like honesty, zest for life, purity, gaiety and happiness. In the stage of experience we find rigidity, amenity, and serenity. If someone to achieve the third stage, he will come to be a man with a glory, has respect for life, enjoying all these elements rigidity, amenity, serenity are to be soften by honesty, sensitivity, purity and gaiety.
He himself has divided his poetry into three stages. He wanted people to read his poetry according to these three stages. He tried to help people with his poetry to reach these stages.
These are not physical but spiritual stages.
The speaker in each group is different. The speaker in the Songs of Innocence is the Piper, the speaker of the Songs of Experience is the Bard.

What is the meaning of a Piper and what are the characteristics of the piper?
The piper is a primitive person who plays on the pipe (عازف الناي). The piper in literature is the shepherd (راعي الأغنام). The piper uses the pipe to guide their sheep. The other connotation that is related to the piper is the prophet. A shepherded is closely connected to a prophet. All the prophets passed this experience of being a shepherd. They spend most of their time in the open nature. Nature has influence on them. Nature teaches them, arouse feelings. These are the influences of man on nature in general, what about if this man is a prophet or poet? These are the characteristics of a piper, living in nature; it reminds us with a prophet. The word prophet reminds us of clear vision, prophetic, the ability to anticipate. This clear vision can be enjoyed by poets. That is why they are good servers of the society. The poet has this ability to see through- to observe, ability to communicate their ideas in a good language. The prophet is sensitive, has a clear vision and ability to anticipate, to be prophetic.

Blake is using the piper for all the characteristics, meaning associated to the piper, the meanings that are suggested by the word piper. The word piper invites us to think of nature, of a shepherded, of a prophet, visionary people including poets.
** The Bard = a classical word for the poet.

What are the characteristics of a bard, what are the other meanings associated to the word Bard?
He has clear vision, imaginative. He must enjoy imagination to be able top put things together. He is visionary, has the ability to see in advance. He needs to live the life around him, to put things together, to make something new, attractive to the reader. The Bard has experience. He is inspired, enjoy inspiration. He is, gifted, talented, has the ability to observe, detect. That is why he chose the bard to be the speaker.

Holy Thursday (Innocence)

It was on a Holy Thursday their innocent faces clean
The children walking two & two in red & blue & green
Grey headed beadles walked before with wands as white as snow
Till into the high dome of Pauls they like Thames waters flow

This poem is taken from the Songs of Innocence. We are being directed to understand that the piper is the writer himself. The poem has a message to convey to the reader.
What is this Holy Thursday? It is a special day, a celebration of the ascendance of Christ to heaven after 40 days of his death and his crucifixion. Number 40 is so important- for the pharaohs- for Muslims.
When the Christ comes back for the second coming, he will stay for 40 days.
In Holy Thursday, children go to church to show their gratitude to the church men. They are the children of a charity school. Children are being led to the church, well dressed, taken to Saint Paul church. They are taken there to show their gratitude and thanks for the church for taking care of them.
"Colors" is the first thing to draw our attention.

in red & blue & green
These are the colors of their uniform. They are dressed well, neat uniform of three colors. The red color connotes life, emotions, love, war, blood, energy, flowers, passions and all these associative meanings are given to the children. They are full of life, energy, love and life. We find all the characteristics of these colors to the children. They are full of life. They are energetic and they need love and emotion. They need to be protected.
Blue is the color of the sky. It is reverence to God, heavens. It connotes purity. Thinking of heaven gives sense of protection, guidance. It is related to the sea water, it is a source of life. It is the reflection of the blue color of the sky. It gives a source of life and protects us. Children need protection. They deserve to be treated as human beings. They have to enjoy life equally.
Green is the color of nature and peace. Nature for the Romantics represented a mother, a God, a nurse and a protector.
The children are dressed in these colored uniform and being led by the;
Grey headed beadles walked before with wands as white as snow
** Grey headed beadles are the aged-old men of the church.
They are supposed to be well-experienced and wise but they are not. They are walking before the children. Children are behind them. They should protect them, keeping an eye before them. They are not walking behind them, but they are walking in front of them. They guide them; they are feeling that they are leaders. The children are on the second place of their interest. They are manipulating the children. The children are coming behind them. Those beadles, priests, church men, the guidance of the children want to be seen first- before the children. Children are taking there on purpose. They are manipulated, used for the advertising of the church, for the propaganda. They dress them well, taking them in rows but not for the good of the children. It is for the good of the church and the churchmen. It is for the propaganda of the church rather than protecting the children or keeping an eye on them. Children are being abused, taken there to be used by the guidance to express their gratitude.
These colors are beautiful, full of life but they are to show off rather than to please. They are rigid colors. They are dressed in the same uniform. It is to be easily noticed and seen.
They are in rows, led by the beadles to the church.
"Thames waters flow"= running water that never stops and never changes.
"Thames"= River Thames .

O what a multitude they seemed these flowers of London town
Seated in companies they sit with radiance all their own
The hum of multitudes was there but multitudes of lambs
Thousands of little boys & girls raising their innocent hands
"multitude" meanshuge number
There is not only a defect in this school but also in the system. All the children are gathering in one place to celebrate this holy occasion. It is not only one school, but all the educational system. They are easily gathered in groups. They are innocent, humble, and easily controlled.
This multitude is reminding us lams, easily guided. They have emotions. They do have relations with each other. They are following and obeying these beadles. They are like lambs, being collected, gathered, and sent to one place with no differences. They are all the same. They are coming in large numbers like running water. They will change the place they will pass. It can make an influence.
The ceremony is there. The poet is making use of every small details of this ceremony.
multitudes of lambs
"lamb" reminds us with Christ. They are waving their hands expressing their gratitude to the church. They raise their hands saying thank you.

Now like a mighty wind they raise to heaven the voice of song
Or like harmonious thunderings the seats of heaven among
Beneath them sit the aged men wise guardians of the poor
Then cherish pity, lest you drive an angel from your door
They start singing. This is part of the ceremony. They were set free. They let their energy come out. It is the inner power, the inner glory that is blowing inside their little bodies. Singing let all their energy, their inner glory. Their voices are being raised to heavens. The inner energy is being set free. They have words to say. They have an ability to express themselves. This is a power that can not be controlled by the rigid, wise, churchmen. Once, they let it go, all their energy is being communicated and connected to the heavens. They overwhelm the whole scene; their power is overwhelming the scene. They are surpassing their guardians now. They are superior to their guardians. They are not wise guardians. They won the scene.
The speaker here, the piper is giving a conclusive stanza. Here he is criticizing the old wisdom. "The aged men wise guardia", they are not wise guidance. They are being trapped in the stage of experience.
It is the rigidity and serenity of the patriarchal society.
It is the second stage of experience, but it never keeps the previous stage, the innocence of this stage. It never comes to the next stage of the higher innocence.
Children won the race, the scene. They surpass their guidance. They achieved this stage. They were able to connect to the heavens their own voices.
In this stanza, he is criticizing the churchmen, the guidance, describing them as abusing the children and manipulating them. They are big failures because they could not win the scene. Once the children are given a chance to say their words, they overwhelmed the whole scene. Their voices reach to the heavens. They left these guardians behind. They are controlling the scene, covering the place, and expressing themselves
