My Galley, Charged with Forgetfulness
BY SIR THOMAS WYATT My galley, chargèd with forgetfulness, Thorough sharp seas in winter nights doth pass 'Tween rock and rock; and eke mine en'my, alas, That is my lord, steereth with cruelness; And every owre a thought in readiness, As though that death were light in such a case. An endless wind doth tear the sail apace Of forced sighs and trusty fearfulness. A rain of tears, a cloud of dark disdain, Hath done the weared cords great hinderance; Wreathèd with error and eke with ignorance. The stars be hid that led me to this pain; Drownèd is Reason that should me comfort, And I remain despairing of the port. back to top ABOUT THIS POEM Discover this poem’s context and related poetry, articles, and media. In blind error when I did persever, Thy sharp repulse, that pricketh aye so sore, Hath taught me to set in trifles no store, And scape forth, since liberty is lever*. he is regretting the fact that he was controlled by his emotions and this is blind error. he admits that insisted on his mistake by fllowing his love Therefore farewell, go trouble younger hearts, And in me claim no more authority; With idle youth go use thy property, And thereon spend thy many brittle darts. it is the conclusion . he is saying goodbye to love . Love has no more a uauthority on him now . he asks love to go and use its hook to tangle to catch others younger hearts. he asks love to go and use it's dart , its duty to attract young people For, hitherto though I've lost my time, Me lusteth no longer rotten boughs to climb. . he has lost time,he has no desire to climb rotten boughs.he is going to perfect his wit. we have imagery (hook) a hook in which a bait is hanged Astophil and stella Loving in truth, and fain in verse my love to show, That she, dear she, might take some pleasure of my pain, Pleasure might cause her read, reading might make her know, Knowledge might pity win, and pity grace obtain,— I sought fit words to paint the blackest face of woe; Studying inventions fine, her wits to entertain, Oft turning others' leaves to see if thence would flow Some fresh and fruitful showers upon my sun-burned brain. But words came halting forth, wanting invention's stay; Invention, nature's child, fled step-dame Study's blows, And others' feet still seemed but strangers in my way. Thus, great with child to speak, and helpless in my throes, Biting my truant pen, beating myself for spite, Fool, said my muse to me, look in thy heart and write ?Q1:who is the writer A: the writer is Sir Philip Sidney the name of this poem is astrophil and stella which mean , asrophil is the star lover , and stella is the star loving in truth ,and fain in verse my loue to show that she, deare she, might take some pleasure of my paine he is truly love and he wants to show it in a work of art like verse. she may read the work and .sympathize with him pleasure might cause her read, reading might make her know knowledgem might pittie winne, and pity grace obtaine because she likes literature ,she will read and she might have mercy upon him , he is a true lover i sought fit wordes to paint the blackest face of woe studying inuentions fine, her wits to entertaine he is searching for good words to show his pain and that's why he studying all the classical works inventions.he wants to entertain her he wants to simulate her interests, because she is intelligent lady,he wants to win her pity oft turning others leaues,to see if thence would flow some fresh and fruitfull showers upon my sun-burnd brain he is trying to read to have a fresh idea that he could write about to gain her sympathy.he reads others works in order to imitate because his brain is sunburnt by stella But words came halting forth, wanting invention's stay; Invention, nature's child, fled step-dame Study's blows, And others' feet still seemed but strangers in my way.
