Disinterestedness means that the critic should not be interested in any party ( whether political economical religeous ..etc ) he should be neutral and not take sides so he would have the freedom of mind because if he was interested in a certain party then he would be serving their agendas and trying to meet their goals instead of trying to reform the society and promote values Remember that Arnold himself is a moralist and was trying to promote morals and calling for reformation. Detachement means that the critic should keep away from the society and its problems, at that time most people were practical ( materialistic ) interested in making money only. Arnold believes that in order to find the solution for that problem you need to not be part of it _detach yourself from it _. so the critic should detach himself from the practicality which is the biggest problem in England at that time independence means to be independent from practicality and its aims , i.e you should not be thinking about the practical consequences of what you do Enthusiasm I think ( not sure ) that it has something to do with knowledge and that a person should be enthusiastic to gain knowledge _ IDK _ Good Luck .gif "(204)") |
