OTHELLO
Her father loved me, oft invited me,
Still questioned me the story of my life
From year to year, the battles, sieges, fortunes,
That I have passed.
I ran it through, even from my boyish days,
To th' very moment that he bade me tell it,
Wherein I spoke of most disastrous chances,
Of moving accidents by flood and field,
Of hair-breadth ’scapes i' th' imminent deadly breach,
Of being taken by the insolent foe
And sold to slavery, of my redemption thence
And portance in my traveler’s history.
Wherein of antres vast and deserts idle,
Rough quarries, rocks, hills whose heads touch heaven
It was my hint to speak—such was my process—

And of the Cannibals that each others eat,

The Anthropophagi, and men whose heads
Grew beneath their shoulders. These things to hear
Would Desdemona seriously incline.

Desdemona's father loved him so much. He used to invite him to his house to listen to his story of life and all the battles he fought. He told him all his adventures in life. He told him how he was captured and sold as a slave, how he bought his freedom, and how he wandered through caves and deserts. He was able to tell him about cannibals أكلى لحوم البشرwho eat each other, and men with heads growing below their shoulders. When he talked about all these things, Desdemona used to listen attentivelyباهتمام. If she had to go do some household dutyأعمال منزلية, he noticed that she’d always come back quickly to hear more of his stories. When he was relaxing, she’d pull him aside and ask to hear some part of a story she had missed. Her eyes would fill with tears at the bad things he went through in his younger years. When his stories were done, she’d sigh and tell him how strangely wonderful and sad his life had been. She said she wished she hadn’t heard it, but she also wished there was a man like him for her. She thanked him and told him that if a friend of him had a story like him to tell, she’d fall in love with him. He took the hint and spoke to her. She said she loved him for the dangers he’d survived, and he loved her for feeling such strong emotions about him. That’s the only witchcraft he ever used. She loved him for the adventures he passed. He loved her as she showed pity on him

IAGO
Thus do I ever make my fool my purse.
For I mine own gained knowledge should profane
If I would time expend with such a snipe
But for my sport and profit. I hate the Moor,
And it is thought abroad that ’twixt my sheets
He’s done my office. I know not if ’t be true,
But I, for mere suspicion in that kind,
Will do as if for surety. He holds me well.
The better shall my purpose work on him.

Cassio’s a proper man. Let me see now

To get his place and to plume up my will
In double knavery. How? How? Let’s see.

This is Iago's plan how he is going to take revenge from Othello. There were rumors that Othello betrayed Iago with his wife. This is another reason why he hates Othello. He is going to sue Cassio to arouse Othello's jealousy for Desdemona making him believe that his wife betrays him with Cassio. He thinks that The Moor is open and straightforward. He thinks any man who seems honest is honest. People like that are easy to manipulate.

Roderigo enters, upset that hehas been beaten and angry because Iago has taken all his money and left Roderigo nothing to show for it. Iago advises him to be patient and not to return to Venice, reminding him that they have to work by their wits. He assures Roderigo that everything is going according to plan. After telling Roderigo to go, Iago finishes telling the audience the plot that is to come: he will convince Emilia to speak to Desdemona on Cassio’s behalf, and he will arrange for Othello to witness Cassio’s suit to Desdemona.

I gave her such a one, ’twas my first gift.

I know not that, but such a handkerchief—
I am sure it was your wife’s—did I today

If it be that, or any that was hers,
It speaks against her with the other proofs.

Iago tells him that he saw Desdemona's handkerchief with Cassio. It was Othello's first gift for Desdemona. It is another proof that Iago is using to prove Desdemona's infidelity for Othello.

Iago is the character of the tragedy and all other characters in the drama place second to him.
Othello is filled of jealousy. He can not understand Desdemona.
Othello is the tragic hero as he has a tragic flaw. Iago is a supporting character. He is the director of tragedy. He is quite successful in his planning. He is envious not being given the position of the lieutenant. But inside him there is racial viceness. Iago is rejected by the Moor. He is using Cassio and Othello. Iago is in full control of the plot. If he is not in the drama, it will not move in such a way. He understands the human psychology. He is trying to dismiss Cassio. He arouses jealousy in Othello. He urges his wife Emilia to steal the handkerchief of Desdemona. From the beginning to the end, we can see that he is the character of the tragedy.
· Othello- the hero of the drama: he does not apply his mind. He confesses at the end of the drama that he loves Desdemona sincerely and dearly but not wisely.He fully relied on Iago who continued to inject the roses of jealousy gaining no pause to his victim for self reflection. If Othello is powerful, he should examine it. He could not find out the truth. It is only fate- destiny that would not let him. Jealousy him destroyed the life of Desdemona and of himself. He could not overcome his jealousy.
He is a moor. He is a general.
· In all the tragedies, Iago is the greatest villain. He conducts so many evil actions.
· the role of Handkertrchief: it had been given to Othello by his mother . It had been given to her by his father. Othello gave it to his wife. It is called the fatal handkerchief. It is one of the Egyptian charmers. On the handkerchief there is the design of a strawberry.
· Othello has superstition in magic supposed to be on this design of the handkerchief.It is the first love token that he gave to his wife. This little thing becomes an instrument to establish the end of Desdemona.
· Accident and chance play role in Shakespearian tragedies. This is sin in Othello. What Iago has in mind, in his plan, he fulfils. Accident and chance helps Iago to carry on his plan. It is by accident that Desdemona dropped her handkerchief.
