Q- what are the works that affected Spenser when he wrote the poem farie queen?
Spenser read a lot. He was fond of Chaucer. He was influenced by the classical works of the Roman and the Greeks. He was influenced by Italian poets. In his work, we will find many references to Chaucer, to the Italian poets, to the classical Greek and Roman literary works.
There are many biblical references- like the Story of Adam and Eve, Satan. The poem is full of biblical allusions that are allegorical.
We have reference to the Pope.

1st stanza:

LO I the man, whose Muse whilome did maske,
As time her taught, in lowly Shepheards weeds,
Am now enforst a far vnfitter taske,
For trumpets sterne to chaunge mine Oaten reeds,
And sing of Knights and Ladies gentle deeds;
Whose prayses hauing slept in silence long,
Me, all too meane, the sacred Muse areeds
To blazon broad emongst her learned throng:
Fierce warres and faithfull loues shall moralize my song.

Here, Spenser is addressing the readers. He said that he had been used to write to humble simple minds, but now he is asking the muse to help him because he is speaking about great noble ladies. He is asking the muse to help him to write about noble gentlemen and great ladies. He does not want to write humble بسيط- متواضعlines anymore. He wants to celebrate the deeds of the heroes. He wants the muse to inspire يلهمhim , tell him with songs of – about these great men and women.
The first line is from Virgil.
For trumpets sterne to chaunge mine Oaten reeds,
It symbolizes heroic poetry
Oaten reeds= the shepherds
He wants to sing musical songs- from the shepherds

And sing of Knights and Ladies gentle deeds

gentle= noble

This is the subject of the first stanza. He is asking the muse to help him of knights and ladies, the noble deeds of knights and ladies

2nd stanza:
Helpe then, ™ holy Virgin chiefe of nine,
Thy weaker Nouice to performe thy will,
Lay forth out of thine euerlasting scryne
The antique rolles, which there lye hidden still,
Of Faerie knights and fairest Tanaquill,
Whom that most noble Briton Prince so long
Sought through the world, and suffered so much ill,
That I must rue his vndeserued wrong:
O helpe thou my weake wit, and sharpen my dull tong.

He is asking Queen Mary= the holy Virgin – for help . He demands the help of holy Virgil. He wants to write a great poem.

in this stanza, we have some characters Of Faerie knights and fairest Tanaquill.

The fairest Tanaquill of the fairy knights is Gloriana. He is addressing Gloriana. He is introducing Gloriana as the fairest fairy.

Whom that most noble Briton Prince so long

Briton= England

Briton Prince= a native person. He is the native of the land. He refers to Prince Arthur.

What is the mission of Prince Arthur?

Sought through the world, and suffered so much ill,

That I must rue his vndeserued wrong

the prince suffered from the weakness and the trouble of people around him. The quest of Briton Prince- Prince Arthur is to seek through the world and to suffer from the illness around him, from the troubles that surround him.

Una and Red Cross Knight met Error- the monster. The Red Cross defeated him.

Stanza 8 is about the battle between Red Cross Knight and the monster Error how he defeated him. How Una told him about the weakness of the monster and participated يساهمin his victory.

Much daunted with that dint, her sence was dazd,
Yet kindling rage, her selfe she gathered round,
And all attonce her beastly body raizd
With doubled forces high aboue the ground:
Tho wrapping vp her wrethed sterne arownd,
Lept fierce vpon his shield, and her huge traine
All suddenly about his body wound,
That hand or foot to stirre he stroue in vaine:
God helpe the man so wrapt in Errours endlesse traine.

This is the attack of the monster. The monster is attacking the Red Cross Knight. The monster jumped.

wound= turned around .

He is using his tail to squeeze the knight. The monster was stronger than him. The knight was wrappedيلف, surrounded completely.

The monster enveloped يحيط بthe Red Cross Knight with his tail and squeezedيعصر him.

His Lady sad to see his sore constraint,
Cride out, Now now Sir knight, shew what ye bee,
Add faith onto your force, and be not faint:
Strangle her, else she sure will strangle thee.
That when he heard, in great perplexitie,
His gall did grate for griefe and high disdaine,
And knitting all his force got one hand free,
Wherewith he grypt her gorge with so great paine,
That soone to loose her wicked bands did her constraine.

Una is sad to see his bad situation. She is sad to see that the Knight is in a bad situation. She shouted. She is encouraging يشجعthe Knight to fight back.

Cride out, Now now Sir knight, shew what ye bee,

She tells him that he is courageous but he lacks faith ينقصه الايمانin his ability. Una symbolizes the Protestant Church. She is telling the knight that he is powerful. She tells him that this is the moment to show who he is.

Add faith onto your force, and be not faint:

Strangle her, else she sure will strangle thee.

She wants to fight him back.

in great perplexitie= when he is entangled متشابك

disdaine= work

he fought back and released himself.

Una urges the Red Cross Knight to strangle = squeezeيعصرthe monster. Una's counsel = advice نصيحةof strength for the Red Cross Knight to have faith and to belief in himself. Add faith onto your force, and be not faint: she said to him that strengthشجاعة, courage and good intentionنية طيبة are not enough. He should add faith إيمانto his power and believe in what he is. Una symbolizes the protestant church. The encounterالمواجهة with the monster suggests the constant problems facing man who aspireيطمح إلى to rightness الصوابbut lacks ينقصهexperience .
