10 LECTURE After executing King Charles I, England became a republic for the first time. There was no king. The ruler was Oliver Cromwell and the puritans. They led the country to a civil war. They banned all kinds of pleasure and amusement. They were religiously fanatics. They spread Calvinism- to lend money with interest- Christianity banned such a thing. This led the English people into suffering. They did not like the role of Cromwell. They suffered to the extent that in 1660- Charles II- the son of Charles I – was living in France. He escaped to France so that he would not be executed like his father. Life in France was full of luxury, literature, and customs. When Charles II was restored to his throne, He was restored without blood. People did not fight against him. They welcomed him. He brought the French way of life. He did not like to communicate with the English people. He brought his noblemen with him from France. Restoration Period 1660- 1798 1660 was the year when Charles II was restored to the throne. It was a time when political leaders sought to establish society on firm basis. There was a tendency to keep things as they were. This attitude was reflected in literature and other arts. After the middle of the 18th century, the old order was slowly breaking down and new ways of understanding the world were bound to follow. There was a change in the English character. At the beginning, they were not ready for a drastic change, major change. They were afraid of change. They did not want a quick change. They are going to have something slow. They wanted to keep the society as it is with no change. Gradually, the tendency to change was reflected in literature and all aspects of life. Slowly and gradually, they started to feel liberated, to feel free. The king and his followers came from France where they had freedom of speaking, of clothing and of writing. At that time, many philosophers lived in France. They brought with them new ideas. In the middle of the 18th century, it was a time of new ideas. There were new ideas started affecting the English people slowly and gradually. During the restoration, we have a new group of kings. Some of the kings were catholic- not protestants- England at that time was protestant. There was a kind of conflict between the people and the king. Some of the people were protestants , some of them are catholic and the new king who wanted every body to be like him. Political background 1. Charles II 1660 2. James II 1685- he was in favor of Roman Catholicism= he was catholic He was expelled from the throne in the glorious revolution- without blood. All the Europe was Catholic- England was protestant. When King James II became king of England, he started to create a kind of aliment= agreement with other catholic countries so that he will impose Catholicism on English protestant people. People rejected him. There was a kind of conflict between the people of England and the king. They resisted the king and they expelled him= forced him to leave the throne. This kind of movement was without blood- bloodless- - no body was killed. This is why it is called glorious revolution. 3. Queen Mary- she was catholic 4. Queen Anne 5. James Stuart 1714-1727 6. George I 7. George II 1727-1760 – all the power is at the hands of the parliament. The parliament is running the country. 8. George III 1760-1820- he was a strong king. In the parliament – the two parties began to emerge, to be established. Now, they knew the duty of the parliament and the duty of the government. The Whig party was responsible for the economical matters. They did not want the government to interfere. The Tories represented the traditions. They supported the king. Major disastersكارثة = something that happens to the whole country 1. The plague الطاعون1665- it is a kind of disease that spread in the country and killed many people. 2. The Great Fire 1660- it happened in London- it was a devastative fire that left two thirds of the population of London homeless. The fire destroyed their houses. Intellectual فكرىlife: Before that, they had fanatics, small minded people. But now, we have a period of openness, of freedom. Writing was opened . This period- Restoration Period has many names= the Age of Enlightenmentالتنوير=development- knowledge – It was called Age of Reason- Age of Dryden – Age of Satire Why this period is important? Why it was called the Age of Enlightenment? 1. it was the age of scientific development 2. the Royal Societyجمعية which is composed of distinguished مميزscientists 3. the existence of philosophers and scientists like a. Isaac Newton- he was a mathematician and an astronomer- a physician. b. William Harvey- he was famous for his paper on blood circulation = الدورة الدموية c. John Locke- wrote essays concerning human understanding. The Restoration Period may be divided into three parts The restoration is characterized by small privilege elite centered on the court and were deeply influenced by French classical taste. It sustains traditional values and admires wit. Wit= as brilliance and quickness of perception with a cleverness of expression. Restoration Period is the Age of Satire. It was the age of freedom of opinion. Satire increasingly becomes the dominant form and there is concern for a moral analysis. Satire= a piece of criticism= = a critical piece of writing criticizing a person=- a situation- the society. It is called the Age of Pope or Dryden It was the form of moral analysis- moral correctness. It was also called the Age of Jonson. It was the time of the rise of the novel and of actual life rather of imaginative world. Writers were interested in writing in reasonable way. Much of the best writing was done in such forms as history, biography, philosophy and political pamphlets. It was also called the Age of Reason which becomes the main characteristics. Why it is called the Age of Reason? Answer- Black book- page 120 – read In the Elizabethan Age writers wrote about nature, emotions, love, pastoral life, country life. In the age of reason, they neglected emotions and concentrated on reason- mind. They wrote about intellectual ideas. It is the age of science, of philosophy. We find reason in most of the writings. Satire is based on reason. The literature of that period was from the head not the heart. Imagination was mistrusted. Read page 120- second paragraph It was called the Age of Jonson- he was a novelist- he wrote many essays. It was called the classical age. Writers at that age went back to the classical writers. Theatres closed by the Puritans were reopened. Actresses were introduced to the theatre. Drama was witty and cynical. Satire started with tragedy. It was Dryden who started satire. He was famous for the use of heroic couplets= two lines rhyming together Green book page 63 – Reading "the tragic drama of this period was made up mainly of heroic plays………………. One of Dryden's best heroic plays : The Conquest of Granada Page 64 His well-known plays: • All for Love ( or The World Well Lost • Don Sebastain A group of writers criticized heroic plays, criticized Dryden and his plays.
