 "to be or not to be this is the question …" There were 2 other hamlet plays but Shakespeare's hamlet was the most popular because of his memorable language his great language , his theme of talking about the world as a big stage , hamlet here is very philosophical he does not talk explicitly although n the 16th c the language was explicit he was ahead of his time , this is a modern element in his play the reader must read behind the lines to understand what hamlet is saying , they must be cultured to understand what is said on stage , the 16th c readers I believe they did not understand what did hamlet mean and they think that hamlet is mad and talking madness , modern readers are capable of interpreting readers one critic says that " to be or not to be…" means to bare hardships in a corrupted society or commit suicide , he is a Christian killing one's self is illicit, hamlet hesitate, since the ghost told him that his father was murdered by poison by Claudius ,did he take action although he believes the ghost and that he was sent by fate to tell him who is the murder ,he hesitates and this is obvious in this quotation , to kill Claudius or not kill him this is the question for him, her hamlet is a cowered he is scared , but he encourages himself he wants to take action but there is something inside him it might be a conflict , hamlet is torn between his duty to kill Claudius and his fear of being punished by law , hamlet wants to achieve retributive justice . We should think of hamlet in 2 ways : He is living in the middle ages he has a traditional , deductive way of thinking , he believes that fate controls man , he is a Christian , Christianity was devided into 2 the old testament and the new testament , Jesus was sent to complete the old testament which is Judaism because there was no tolerance Jesus was sent to teach people tolerance, how to judge people both ways strict but with tolerance , in the old testament it said an eye for an eye… hamlet as a Christian wants to achieve justice but how by his hands or by low, and the law in Denmark is corrupted because there is a corrupted king , so how can hamlet achieve his goal , how can hamlet help his father rest his soul??!he has inner conflict , he is mentally disturbed he is a psycho patient . Hamlet starts talking to Ophelia but she does not understand anything but she wants to carry on with the plane ,she starts talking about their love hamlet says who told you that I love you???!! I do not , he knows there are ear droppers behind the curtains, hamlet after shocking her he starts to feigned madness , this is the theme of artifice , he asks her whether she is beautiful or clever , he tells her to go to live in a nunnery , you should not marry any man , all men he tells her are revengeful, he means that je is taking revenge from her although he loves her because she listens to her father, then he tells her if you marry another man I will be a monster meaning a dandy , he asks her where is your father ? she says at home, she is a liar she deceives hamlet, she is like a puppet in the hands of her father and he says that’s better because if he is out he will spread his stupidity everywhere. Ophelia is a victim of men , Polonius, Laertes and hamlet , after hamlet left , the king and Polonius came out, Claudius is sure that Polonius does not know anything , hamlet does not love Ophelia at all , Polonius is in a critical situation because he was assuring them that it is love sickness but now he is sure that hamlet is not love sick and that he has melancholia, Claudius decides to send him to England to be treated with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to take care of him. , in this scene queen Gertrude is on her room Polonius will tell her that he will hide behind the curtain to hear the conversation and after hamlet leaves he goes and tells the king , queen Gertrude is not a good mother because she accepts that Polonius hides behind the curtains and drop his ears on them , hamlet enters very irritated very envious . the scene about his mother: He goes to her with the spirit of the Nero in him, he talks very badly to her, she blames him for offending Claudius, so she irritated him more, so he starts to confront her that she has committed a sin , which is incest , which is to accept to marry her husband's brother, and he told her that he is not mad, that he is talking good to her, he told her also that Claudius had killed his father, this is the first time to hear about that, Gertrude does not know, this is the first time she hears this, she does not believe hamlet and thinks that her son has gone mad, she does not believe him, hamlet at this moment wished to be like tyros, Purus son of Achilles, at this moment he wanted to be like a who kills Claudius in front of the queen. hamlet was talking violently to the queen accusing her of the sins she committed, and coming very close to her , holding her , seizing her, so she screams and she asks him if he wants to kill her , and she asks for help, and she cried for help, Polonius behind the curtain got scared and he echoed what she said , so she said help what? and he moved like this, so the curtain moved to hamlet and he immediately got his sword out and killed Polonius , immediately at this moment he is like a Purus who killed the king in front of the queen, is he the king? It's not the king , its Polonius, coming out of the curtain saying I'm killed, hamlet was shocked thinking it was Claudius , hamlet felt very bad, he grinded his teeth, he did not mean to kill Polonius, Polonius is an innocent man, yes he is foolish, and hamlet despises him, but he does not deserve to be killed for his foolishness and for his evil, this is not a punishment for evil to be killed ,The ghost appeared to hamlet , Gertrude does not see him, but has sees him talk to him, The ghost came to tell hamlet two messages : He came to ask him why he is very late in killing Claudius , he blames hamlet in his delay in killing Claudius. The second thing is he asked hamlet to relent with his mother, to pity his mother, these are the two messages, Gertrude saw hamlet talking to the air, so she is sure hamlet is mad, while appear to everybody why not to Gertrud? One to be said that Gertrud is not a good person, she has an evil spirit in her, so the ghost is a goods spirit, it appears to good people only, appears to horatio, to hamlet , to the others, but not to Gertrud, hamlet assures his mother, that he is not mad, and asked her to believe him, he wants to help his mother, the ghost had just told him to relent with his mother, so he told his mother : I want you to repent your sins, and confess her sins, and he tells her is the first step to salvation is not to sleep with Claudius anymore, because this is incest, hamlet tells his mother that he doesn’t mean to kill Polonius at all, and he tells her that fate has put Polonius in his way, he tells her that it is fate that made him kill Polonius, he believes that it is fate that killed him, and that he is not responsible for that, he believes that fate urges him to be cruel only to be kind, hamlet is highly philosophical, artifice, hamlet in crimes to encourage him to take action and achieve repetitive justice, hamlet says that he has become a scourge and a minister, a virtues avenger, he achieved re justice, he is torn by his inner concept, he is confused, is he a tool or a minister, Polonius is dead, it is a very important incident in the play is this a climax or not, so Polonius's death raised definite difficult questions, is hamlet a scourge or a minister, is hamlet cold or kind, is hamlet sinful or innocent, how can we judge him? hamlet tells his mother also that Claudius will send him to England with his true friends that are not his true friends Guildenstern and Rosencrantz , he tells his mother that he knows that Claudius wants to trap him, Claudius asked hamlet when he was watching the murder of Gonzaga he tells him what is the title of the play? Hamlet replies: it is the mouse trap, I made this play to trap you, you are the trap him and that Guildenstern and Rosencrantz will take part in his destruction, he knows that Claudius will prepare for his death in England, so he tells his mother that he will turn the tables on him, so hamlet will be equal, he tells her indirectly that he will kill Claudius, he doesn’t mention it, his language is subtle his language is modern we need to read between the lines to understand what hamlet means, think of the issue of free will and fate, this is the end of the act, think of the issue of fate and free will, what about hamlet? What about our tragic hero? What controls him? Fate? Or free will? What will he kill hamlet by? Fate or free will? Because hamlet lives in the middle ages he tells his mother that he believes that fate made him kill Polonius, that he is innocent, that he is not sinful, but the renaissance audience will think hamlet has a free will, that hamlet chooses to kill Polonius, so he is to blame that he is sinful, Because hamlet was very hesitant he didn’t see his face, the face is the identity, Polonius's death , the point of view of hamlet is contrasted with the Elizabethan point of view, hamlet believes he did it because of fate and that he is innocent , where as the Elizabethan believe it is free will , man has free will of his own, that he is capable of judging Adam justly , and that if he is foolish and hasty , he is still to be blamed, so some people say he is sinful while others say he is not sinful.
