Each writer has different style. When reading any play related to any writer, we need to connect it to the character itself. The age and the writer have direct influence of that time period.
In the 16th century, Most of the poetry was love poetry. There was poetry of Spenser. Epics were all about love poetry. Women were the centre of poetry. Among 16th century famous writers, Shakespeare is a great writer. He is known for his drama. Renaissance of the 16th -century had direct influence on the literature of the 17th century. All the 17th century is all about revolution. Your Book page 1049 The major events of the 17th century • Puritanism • Revolution • Restoration Puritanism: it is the main cause that caused revolution. It was a kind of revolt, an angry movement. Gradually it diminished its effect till it reached the second half of the 17th century. The first half of this century starts from 1603- 1659. Puritanism started from 1660 onwards. At the end of the 17th century, a puritan revolt- restoration happened. In London, The church was on control of every part of the republic. Everything was so good, in discipline. Most of the writings were depending on the church and on the queen. People used to go to the theatre to watch plays. They did not need to publish plays in books. Everything was controlled by the church at that time. Protestants is a sect of Christianity. Protestants started an angry movement. They wanted freedom, not to be controlled by the church. They wanted to have their own thinking. They gave a new religion. They wanted new pure Christianity. This is why they were called Puritans. They did not want any drama to be presented on theatres. They thought that there should not be any luxury in life. They wanted simple life that focuses on pure Christianity. Every thing that was sensuous was banned. All means of entertainment was prohibited. After Queen Elizabeth, King James I – 1603- 1625 became the king. It is called the Jacobean period. Another king who ruled after James I is King Charles I- 1625- 1649. Puritanism became strong with the passage of time. King Charles was sent to exile. all theatres were closed. England became a Republic governed by Oliver Cromwell. The Puritans were fighting two things. They fought two civil wars with the intention to develop rightness in man and to get liberty of individual. Ideas about protestant concept developed. They started focusing on religion. People were very narrow- minded. People started reading about religion. They started to focus on the achievement of a person- on man. People started, thinking observing the concepts of life under the influence of science. Writers stopped writing dramas. Only kind of literature to be found on that time was pamphlets written by the parliamentarians. There were just few newspapers. Poetry had three or four major forms at that time. Sonnets were mostly written by John Donne. Grotesque: Was a kind of performance, a piece of writing which tries to make something look funny. It focused only on the funny aspects of things Satire was written by the voice opposed to enemies In 1660, King Charles II was restored to the throne. It is called the Restoration period. The characteristics of the 17th century: When talking about the 17th century, we have to focus on the literary trends that developed during that period; how this age was affecting literature at that period. We need to know which kinds of characteristics, which kind of movements and what kind of literary forms, genres that were there. The literary genres are drama, poetry and prose. Poetry and drama as genres of literature flourished a lot in the 16th century. There were Shakespearian sonnets, Shakespearian drama. Till now these are considered as being of vital importance. Sonnet was the most popular literary form at that time. Sometimes, there were satires that were part of poetry. What is the background of the age? What was going on in the nation? What was the ruling party? What was the impact of the ruling on people? What were the current movements? What was the result of those movements? What were the wars that happened at that time? What were the results of these wars? All these things had influence on the literature of the age. 17th century does not have very pleasant facts. It has two civil wars. It included the assassination of two kings, the exile of the king as the result of the movement that is known in the history as Puritanism. It resulted in these two civil wars. The most important incident of the century was Puritanism and the result of it was these two civil wars. All over the century, there is a strong effect of religion on the century. There was no more love poetry as it was in the 16th century. In 16th century, poetry concentrated on love, bravery, chevrly . But in the 17th century, poetry moved from love poetry to religious poetry as the impact of the movement of Puritanism. People had started thinking about religion, what rights can religion give to a common person? What kind of liberty within religion a person can enjoy? It was very extremist. Every entertainment, every kind of luxury was banned. The only good outcome of this movement that people started looking into their inner self started knowing about themselves. when the religion was there for the extreme level, theatres were banned. They were closed. it means that there were no dramas. This century affected drama very much. We have a very famous poet – John Milton - who had written a lot of pieces of poetry. He wrote Paradise Lost. It is the story of the fall of the human being and how he can illuminate his status by having a strong relation with God. it focuses on the human being, his nature, his weaknesses . As a result of these weaknesses, he falls . after his fall, what makes him to stand again is his relation to God. We will do few beginning lines of Paradise Lost- first 50 lines. When talking about religious poetry, we have another famous poet that is John Donne. His poetry is important. It has more religious aspect. The Puritans banished King Charles I. King Charles I was sentenced to death. Some of the Puritans rulers were very religious. People were going to the extremes; do not care about the delicate softness of the feelings. Read your Book pages: 1049- 1059: The characteristics of the 17th century and their effect on the literary trends. When studying a poem, we have to know about the poet. We do not have to know all the details about the poet's life. We only need to know the things in his life that affected his poetry. When analyzing the poem, we have to keep three aspects: • Analyzing the poem in the light of the characteristics of the age- what was the effect of the age on the poem • the effects of the life of the poet on his poetry We have to analyze the poem in the light of three major aspects: 1. whether it is a heroic couplet 2. whether it contains Augustine satire 3. Whether it is mock heroic. Heroic couplet: two lines rhyming together. Some poems consists of one couplet= very short poem. A couplet is a combination of two lines in poetry which rhyme with each other, having the same rhyme scheme. It is about the achievement of a particular person in history. Augustine Satire: it is to mimic a person who is the enemy. it was only used for the enemy . There were two opposing classes in the 17th century- Puritanism and Liberalism- in criticizing each other, they used Augustine satire. Mock heroic: to make fun of some heroic figure in the history. People wanted to have the liberty to speak whatever they want to speak. The poet's life affects the poetry he writes. John Milton was a blind poet. He wrote Paradise Lost in the middle of the 17th century. We should know what kind of religious ideas he had. |
