Starting the symbolism

The writings of George Eliot cannot be taken on at face value. There is always a symbolic meaning or hidden meaning underneath her images and the titles of her books. The title of her novel "The Mill on the Floss" is very significant; as the mill refers to the human artifact which represents the future and related to doubt and uncertainty of the Victorian age. On the other hand, the Floss refers to nature which represents the past and related to firm believes. George Eliot raises the status of the natural element by giving it a proper name which is the Floss, on the contrary to the human artifact which was given a common name which is the mill and that shows that she biased the element of nature.

George Eliot is painting a scenery through the first lines of the first chapter of the novel. She uses two kinds of scenery throughout her novel. The first kind is called the idyllic scene which is not active scene and related to human artifacts. The second is called the dramatic scene which infuses life and related to the natural element. Since the very beginning, she uses a dramatic imagery by saying "the broadening Floss" to infuse life to the scene, as well as her use of loving words such as "the loving tide" to emphasize her love to nature.

The bridge is very symbolic in the sense that it bridges the gap between nature side and human side or between the self and the outer world.

One of the most important sceneries is the scenery of the waggoner who represents fate by being always honest. The huge wagon is life and the horses are the human beings. Man's life is led by fate which means that everything is predetermined, and it needs to be moving all the time because whenever it stops, he would be either dead or insane.

Oyster is a symbol of something tender from outside and very soft inside.

The background

The Victorian age is an age of transition which marks the movement of the English society from the feudal system (there is no middle class) to a modern system. This movement was mostly effected by the industrial revolution because it caused the existence of the middle class. People from this class started to have wealth and struggled a lot to get their rights of voting which gave the pride and helped them to become an eminent power within the English society.

The way of life had changed according to the communicational and educational changes which affected the convictions, believes, and the morals of people at that time. There was no firm believes in god and faith anymore. It was a change of dual aspects; deconstruction and reconstruction.

Darwin's "The Origin of Species" and Nietzsche's statement that was published in the nineteenth century, had shaken the believes of the Victorians about god and the origins of man. These two books coursed in knowledge to become relative; there is no bad and good. There was lack of authority, as absolute truth was replaced by doubt and god was replaced by individualism, which led to skepticism.

The morality

Morality speaks of a system of behavior in regards to standards of right or wrong behavior. George Eliot relates morality with the tragic vision which comes from the disparity between the outer world (cosmos) and the inner world (herself). The characteristics of the cosmos is that it is unresponsive, indifferent and mysterious and the principles on which this outer world functions are the principle of aggressiveness and competition which lead to the motto of the cosmos which is the survival of the fittest.

The Tragic Vision

Everything is predetermined by fate and heredity in all of George Eliot's writings which shows her tragic vision. She drew the scene of the Waggoner who represents fate at the first chapter to represent life by the huge wagon and the human beings by the horses. Man's life is led by fate which means that everything is predetermined, and it needs to be moving all the time because whenever it stops, he would be either dead or insane. This vision comprises the artistic vision of George Eliot herself and not the narrator.

Another point related to this vision is the concept of heredity. Tom inherited the prudence of the Dodsons by being responsible and working hard to pay the debts of his father. He grew to be very mature but his attitude toward Maggie and Philip is still childish. He is being stubborn and this stubbornness was inherited from the Tullivers. He succeeded economically in making wealth but when it comes to emotions he become one sided which is the wrong combination. He didn't grow up but grow old.

At the beginning of the book, Maggie was through and through a Tulliver in being passionate and loving nature but she changed after the bankruptcy which was a turning point in her life. She was heedless at the beginning then she became very regardful of her duty. When she rejected the book, she was practicing self restrain and being like the Dodsons in rejecting all the joys of life.

The two lives of the Tullivers and the Dodsons

George Eliot presents two ways of life through the Dodsons and the Tullivers. She manifested these ways through the metaphor of economics.

One of the characteristics of the Dodsons is that they live a barren life, without warmth and they are very much attached to material things for example when aunt pullet asked Bessy to stop the children from coming inside the house before cleaning their shoes with the old mat. In order to emphasize this characteristic, she uses the images that are associated with darkness and death. Their images are all stand to mortality and domesticity.

There is a code in every aspect of the Dodson's life. This code is marked by two characteristics: prudence and clear sightedness; which means that they leave nothing to chance and everything is planned. These two characteristics insured them stability and comfortable life throughout the book. Whenever she talks about the Dodsons ,they are presented indoors .they seem to be mature but they never act because they are afraid of making the wrong choice. They only react toward the actions of the Tullivers which shows their immaturity.

Again ,George Eliot uses economics to manifest the Tullivers way of life. if we are to talk about economic failure ,we would talk about mr.tulliver's inadequacy and misfit in this wealth but inherited it and he would lose it because he doesn't have prudent or clear sightedness. He thinks of himself as being perfect and through the blame of his mistakes on others. The Tullivers are described by the river as natural element with its natural energy ; as when it exceeds its limits, it becomes destructive.

One of the main characteristics of the Tullivers is that they have warmth passion. For example, when Mr.Tulliver insists to take the lawsuit despite the advices given to him not to go, as he was derived by his anger and heedlessness of consequences which led to his bankruptcy. He took the lawsuit without thinking about the consequences which led to the tragedy that befall the Tullivers.

George Eliot represents the two lives of the Tullivers and the Dodsons in an ironic way by showing the complementary relation between them using a paradoxical structure. Even though they are different on the surface, they are in reality completing each other.

She uses the pressure of heredity to emphasize that Maggie and Tom did not determent their own destiny or personality but it was determined before hand by the way they were brought up. For example, Tom inherited the prudence of the Dodsons by being responsible and working hard to pay the debts of his father. وتحطينه بفايل على ماأعتقد
