Note: When someone says this idiom, it is NOT a compliment.
Meaning of Have your head in the clouds This idiom can be used in two situations: MEANING 1 To be out of touch with the everyday world and to be unrealistic because of it. To be living in a fantasy (world). To have impractical ideas or dreams. Sometimes the person doesn’t know the facts or reality of the situation. MEANING 2 To be daydreaming and not paying attention to what is happening around you right now. You are physically present but your mind and thoughts are somewhere else. You are distracted from the present. This idiom is often used when the other person is not paying attention. The meaning of Icing on the cake Simple definition: Something that makes a good situation even better or a bad situation even worse. The icing on the cake has two meanings and they strangely happen to be opposites. This idiom can be used in a positive sense and a negative sense. Positive meaning = an additional good thing happens to something that is already good or positive making that situation even better. Negative meaning = an additional bad thing is added to another bad thing that has already happened making the situation worse. In this case the idiom is used in a sarcastic (or ironic) way. . |

Meaning of Couch Potato A couch potato is a person who spends a lot of time watching television with little or no physical activity. They can do this either sitting or lying down on a couch (or sofa) or even sitting in an armchair. The idea is that they don’t move very much and a couch potato can sometimes be considered lazy or inactive. Instead of going outside or doing other active activities, they prefer spending long periods of time in front of the television. ******************* Why Potatoes? This idiom has nothing to do with real potatoes but why are Potatoes used? Well, have you ever seen a potato running down the street or playing sport? Not likely because they don’t move AT ALL! Another reason could be because potatoes have eyes, which are needed to watch TV. (See below) Did you know that potatoes have eyes? Yes, they can sometimes have several eyes though they are not like the eyes humans and animals have to see. It is the name given to the part of a potato from where roots sometimes emerge and become a plant. More potatoes can grow from this part that sticks out a little. Did you also know that corn have ears? Yes they do but that’s for another article . Example sentences with Couch Potato: The only thing you do all day is watch TV. You’ve become a real couch potato, haven’t you?
