>what are the branches of linguistics? define each*

Phonetics: the study of production and perception of speech sounds
Phonology: is the study of the sounds patterns of language

Morphology: is the study of word structure and formation

Syntax: is the study of sentences structure

Semantics: is the study of meaning

Language acquisition: language acquisition examines how children learn to speak and how adults learn a second language

what are the sub-branches of linguistics?

Sociolinguistics: is the study of interrelation of language and social structure, linguistic
variation, and attitudes toward language

Neurolinguistics: is the study of the brain and how it functions in the production, perception and acquisition of language

Historical linguistics : is the study of language change and the relationships of language to each other
Anthropological linguistic : is the study of language and culture and how they interact

Pragmatics: is the study of the meaning in contex

who is the informant?
He is the native speaker of a language and provides us with data without experiments
how do linguists collect data?
From the informants
*
what is the difference between competence & performance?
Competence: is the knowledge you possess about how to speak a language.
Performance is your real world linguistic output
What does mental grammar consist of?
Lexicon –syntactic component – phonological component ¬– semantic component

^^^^^
the informant is a native speaker of a language that is studied by a linguist

what is the difference between competence &performance?
competence is our grammatical knowledge of the language whereas performance is our production and perception of the language ;that is how we use the language
What are finite and infinite?
the finite are the set of words and rules
while the infinite are the number of sentence and the length of sentences that we produce from the finite sets
What are: aphasia, global aphasia and specific language impairment?
Aphasia: a linguistic disorder that is a result of brain damage
Global aphasia: loss of language
specific language impairment(don't know)

*Why do linguists study Garden-path sentences? Give an example.
To show that we have semantic process in our mental grammar
Example: The soldiers marched across the parade ground are a disgrace

*what are the difficulties that faced neurolinguists?

what is the approach they followed to study the brain?

give 2 e.g of neurolinguists' success?

*How did Chomsky prove his notion about language faculty
