4. How to Translate Poetry : theory and process
Concerning the processes involved in poetry translation, a common question asked is whether the process of interpretation and creation are separate or not. Some writers appear to suggests that they are: Sayers Peden (1989) speaks of ‘dismantling’ the original poem and ‘building’ the translation. Scott (2000) says maintaining that reading and translation are inextricably linked. Creativity is also an element in reading as much as in writing. So translation could be a kind of close reading and writing of the ST. Translation is of course a less creative act than writing one’s poetry
