ANTONIO’S FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
يوم أنطونيو الأول بالمدرسة
13-14#

At noon,
we opened our lunches to eat.
في الظهر
فتحنا وجبات الغدائنا لنأكل

Miss Maestas left the room
and a high school girl came and sat at the desk while we ate.
غادرت الآنسة ميستاس الغرفة
وطالبة من الثانوية أتت و جلست على المقعد بينما نحن نأكل

My mother had packed a small jar of hot beans
and some good, green chile
wrapped in tortillas.
وضعت أمي لي عبوه صغيرة من الفول الساخن
وبعض فلفل التشيلي الأخضر الجيد
ملفوف في خبر التورتيلا.

When the other children saw my lunch,
they laughed and pointed again.
Even the high school girl laughed.
عندما رأى الأطفال الأخرون غدائي
ضحكوا وأشاروا علي
حتى طالبة الثانوية ضحكت.

They showed me their sandwiches which were made of bread.
وأروني شطائرهم المصنوعة من الخبز

Again
I did not feel well.
مجدداً
لم أشعر بشعور جيد.

I gathered my lunch and slipped out of the room.
قمت بجمع غدائي وخرجت من الغرفة

The strangeness of the school and the other children made me very sad.
غرابة المدرسة والأطفال الآخرين جعلتني أشعر بالحزن.

I did not understand them.
لم أستطع فهمهم

I sneaked around the back of the school building,
and standing against the wall
I tried to eat.
But I couldn't.
تسللت الى الفناء الخلفي للمدرسة
ومتكأ على الجدار
بدأت أحاول الأكل
ولكني لم استطع

A huge lump seemed to form in my throat
and tears came to my eyes.
غصة كبيره كانت في حلقي
وسالت الدموع من عيني

I yearned for my mother
and at the same time
I understood that she had sent me to this place
where I was an outcast
اشتقت لأمي
وفي نفس الوقت
فهمت انها هي من ارسلني الى هذا المكان
حيث أصبحت منبوذاً

I had tried to learn
and they had laughed at me.
بذلت جهدي لأتعلم
ولكنهم ضحكوا علي

I had opened my lunch to eat
again they had laughed and pointed at me
فتحت علبة غدائي لأكل
ضحكوا مجدداً وأشاروا الي.
