Virtue by John Herbert

Virtue means good deeds.

In the first stanza he is describing a day as sweet like summer day because it is calm, quiet and ****************************ing. It is bright and the sun shines. Look how he compared this sweet day bridal which means that it is a ceremony of the earth and the sky, so it is a magnificent image here. This sweet day is like a wedding ceremony of the earth and the sky.

The dew shall weep thy fall to –night

For thou must die

Dew is small drops of water that appears in the early morning on the leaves. The dew is crying and shedding tears and this personification. It is crying because the day will end when the night arrives.

Thou mean you
Thy means your

Scientifically when the sun starts to rise, the drops fall, so it is like a human being weeping or crying because the day is going to end at night. The day must die because this is the cycle of nature.

Sweet rose, whose hue angry and brave
Bids the rash gazer wipe his eye
Thy root is ever in its grave
And thou must die

In the second stanza the speaker’s talking about the sweet rose and we call know roses and how they have many beautiful colors. Hue means the color which is red and we know that it’s red because we have the word angry and brave.

Gazer means that a person who stares.

Here the movement of wiping the eyes is to look with great consideration and great wonder to the rose and its beauty. It is as it is ordering any human being who looks at it to wipe hi eye to consider the great power of the almighty God. The root of the flower is in the ground as it is like a grave. And the rose must die at the end. Roses actually don’t live for a long time.

Sweet spring/full of sweet days and roses
A box where sweets compacted lie,
My music shows ye have your closes

And all must die

In the third stanza – Now he is talking about the beautiful season of spring, the season of beauty and rebirth. In spring the snow melts and plants start to grow. This season contains a lot of beautiful days and beautiful roses and the flowers start to grow. Spring is like a box of these sweet things. It is a ****************phor here because he compares Spring as a box of these sweet things.

My music refers to his creation of poetry which show the beauty of the spring season but at the end all must die.

Only a sweet and virtuous soul,
Like season’d timber, never gives.
But though the whole world turn to coal,
Then chiefly lives.

After the end of all mankind when it is judgment day what will survive is only the virtuous soul, the soul that has accomplished good deeds. Timber is the wood of the trees.

In the last stanza the speaker concentrates on that everything is going to die except the virtuous soul.

The poem reflects the speaker’s delights at the loveliness of nature as well as his meditation in response to nature. Meditation means thinking deeply and philosophically. After this deep thinking, he realized that the only thing that is going to survive is the virtuous soul.

What is the theme of the poem ?
Virtue survives
Let’s look at the musical devices
Do have alliteration ?
Cool and calm
Sweet spring
Sweet soul

What about consonants ?
Sweet of bright
Shall fall
Rose whose
Sweet sweet
Shows closes
Timber never

Do we have assonance ?
Whole coal
Do have any refrain ?
And thou must die
But we have variation on the last stanza it is a contrast
Then chiefly lives.

We have a change in the meaning here we have a kind of reaffirming that the life of the virtuous soul is the one that is going to survive and any other thing is going to due.

If we look at the meter
Sweet day Spondee
So cool iambic
So calm iambic
So bright iambic
SWEET day, so cool, so calm, so bright !
So it is iambic tetrameter
