فقرة phrase structure

Sentences are NOT simply formed by juxtaposing words like beads on a necklace. Rather, they have a hierarchical design/structure in which words are grouped into larger units called phrases. In a sentence like: The doctor examined the patient, The words the and doctor form a phrase (NP) and the words examined and the patient form another phrase (VP). [ The + doctor ] [examined + the patient].
In Traditional syntactic analysis, the doctor is the Subject and examined the patient is the Predicate.
