Good Morning,

When a person produces an incorrect linguistic form, this can be referred to as a mistake or an error:

1- If the person KNOWS the correct linguistic form, but produced the wrong form because he/she was in a hurry then it is referred to as a MISTAKE. This happens to native and non-native speakers as well. For example, you know how to spell the word WATER but by mistake you wrote WATAR.

2- If the person DOES NOT KNOW the correct form and as a result produced the wrong form, then it is an ERROR. This mainly happens to non-native speakers. For example, you do not know how to spell the word PAPER, as a result, you spelled it as PAIPER.
