Imlac says that poetry is the highest point of learning which is related to nature. He also says that the ancient poets are considered the best, they used poet to describe their feelings and nature. He says when reading poetry you should read it in different languages. He commends Rasselas to use his own experience and creation because imitation is not enough. Poetry should be based on one's experience. In addition he says that poetry deals with the good, bad, beautiful and ugly things. To a poet nothing can be useless. He as well says that a poet should be a man of broad experience; a poet should extend his resources of knowledge. Furthermore, a poet should deal with general not specific. He says that a poet should release himself from prejudice. Finally, a poet should be open-hearted and open-minded. He must know many languages and many sciences.
