The Pre-Raphaelite

Since they were painters, their style, as poets, was affected. They applied their painting on their poetry.
They took their subjects from Christianity and medieval incidents.
They revolt against the doctrine which was followed by all the Victorians in painting (impressionistic) >>> (Renaissance way of painting).
They called for equality; therefore, they revolted against the hierarchical institute in church and in society.
What is the relation between this matter and their poetry?
They emphasized on the simplicity and purity; a matter seen as the opposite and against the hypocritical society. They wanted to be pure in both religion and society. So, they chose simple colours for the sake of simplicity and used the basic colours, all of which to depict real nature (as it is) because they were against imaginative depiction of nature. They were realistic in depicting nature as it is, but since it is art they are dealing with, imagination is there as well.
The characteristics of the Pre-Raphaelite:
1/ they were mainly painters. Poetry and painting usually come together.
2/ they were interested in nature. (Pure and real one)
3/ they deal with human nature and revolt against the hypocrisy of Victorians.
4/ they went to medieval for simplicity; for their lives were simple. It was their way to escape the pressure of the 19th century that invaded their lives.
5/ they chose their subjects from Shakespeare, etc. to go away from Victorians.

وهذا تعليقها عالقصيدة

The House of Life is a sonnet sequence.
· He tackles real life not imaginative.
(Sonnet) >>> capitalized to indicate that it is the subject matter. He chose a sonnet because it discusses one single matter. It depicts only one moment.
· When looking at a painting, one will recall the events related to it and so they will be eternal ones. For remembering them, it will give them eternity.
· (Soul )>>> capitalized (Dead)>>> the moment is over, dead, but (deathless) the memory is eternal.
· Whatever the sonnet depicts is not important. What is important is that the moment it depicts shall remain forever. (He focuses on the immortality of art).
· In this poem, the immortality of the sonnet is more important than its topic.
· (Sonnet) capitalized and repeated for affirmation. It depicts the nature of things deeply.
· A sonnet is like a coin>>>has two faces( the soul and the appearance)
· Here, there is repetition of the same idea. Whether the sonnet speaks about life, love, Charon (the angel) it pays a tax to death and will remain immortal.
· The subject matter is simple, but the language is not. It seems as craving a statue. It needs a lot of efforts.
· Form >>> a sonnet, no shift of thoughts. There is mixture in rhyme scheme of the octave ( abba abba) resembles Petrarch. The sestet ( ababcc) is Shakespearean. But, in the Shakespearean sonnet, the theme is in the last 2 lines. Here, it is in the last line.
· So, it is not a complete imitation. He is coining his own style.
· In choice of words>>> very complex>>> to show the effect of sculpture.
· The capitalized words are Sonnet-Soul / Sonnet-Power
· Day-Night / Life-Love/ Death are opposites and all reflect time.
· He believes and struggles.
· Idea of time and acceptance of death.
· He struggles against death, but at the same time he accepts it and fight for immortality.
· The struggle is shown in the previous words.
· He tries to pay the toll to Death and struggle against it and accept it.
· His struggle is to give a meaning for his life. His works immortalize him.
· The topics he tackles are all one matter not separated: time, immortality of art, acceptance of death and giving meaning to life.
· Sonnet symbolizes art.
· It is all about life. (sonnet <-->art) is the only word that is repeated against ( Time which includes life, death, night and day).
· He is presenting facts and realities. He discusses the immortality of art.
