pilgrim’s progress and robinson crusoe are journey novels.
he wrote only two novels shandy and sentimental the two of them are journeys, because his father was an officer. He was one of the earliest novelists. These two novels are important because it has experiments and structure. He married a woman but he wasn’t happy with her.
this novel is important because the sentimentality of description. He travels through france and italy. We have to kinds for describing a novel an objective description and a subjective description. An objective description: Sees something from the outside. Laurence didn’t like this kind of description; he is different from previous writers because he unliked them. A subjective description: The writer expresses his own point of view. He wrote about his sentiments towards the countries and described people.
smollett, for example described italy and france from an objective point of view.
why did laurence travel to france and italy?
because he wanted to go to warmer places.
theme of the novel
the theme is a sentimental theme. (we have to explain sentimental & journal)
sentimental: Expressive of or appealing to sentiment, especially the tender emotions and feelings, as love, pity, or nostalgia.
journal: A daily record, as of occurrences, experiences, or observations.
episode: short or little story.
this novel is episodic. The link between them(episodes) is the character of yourick.
then they went to the hotel that had only one room, they had to share this room with two other women’s.
episodic novel: is a novel that consists of a number of episodes or little stories. In an episodic novel there has to be a link that connects these stories. In most episodic novel the link is the novels main character.
autobiography novel: the writer writes about his own life
monologue: to speak one thing loudly ( thinking to himself)
