actually later on is correct. But I don't know what is the difference between later and later on
some say: there is no difference and on here is just an intensifier
and some say that later on suggests that something will happen in the not too distant future, but with later there is no time limit.
I do not Know about the rule GRAMMATICALLY

BUT

When I watch a movie or anything in ENGLISH DIALOGUE

I hear them saying

LATER ON

if they are telling the others a Sequence of events

like: He went to the company early morning etc....later on he had dinner with the family. It comes between the events.

but for telling the others that I will meet them later they usually say: see you later or catch you later

I depended on what I hear mostly
