The effect of celtic on English language
|
Celtic was the native language of Britain, not English. English was brought to Britain by
Anglo-Saxon. After almost seven hundred years, the language of Britain remained English. when the Anglo-Saxon came to Britain they came in contact with the Celtic language. However, the contact was not friendly as the Anglo-Saxon were fierce people who attacked and killed Celts and pushed them towards west.
so, there are 2 reasons why the influence of the Celtic was weak :
1-the contact was short and unfriendly.
2-the Celts were not a superior culture that the Anglo-Saxon should learn from them.
the words that are left from the Celtic language to be part of English are mostly the names of towns, hills, rivers, and some place names...
other celtic words which enterd the english language were related to
1-those the Anglo-Saxons learned through everyday contact with the native, and
2-those that were introduced by the Irish missionaries in the north.
examples; binn>> basket,crib
bratt>>clock
