¨ This theory is important theory and is the greatest theory on the nature of the process after Wordsworth’s romantic conception of poetry, because it is a remarkable gift in his criticism. What he holds is that the poetry and poet are separated things. He explain his theory in two phrases .First, “the relation of the poet to the past,`. Sconed, “the relation of the poem to its author.’ The First phrase says that the past is never dead and also lives in present. According to the poet,Ifwe approach a poet with an open mind, “We shall often find that not only the best, but the most individual parts of his work may be those in which the dead poets, his ancestors, assert their immortality most vigorously.” And if he is a great poet, he alters his work in no small scale. But while in giving he asserts his individuality, in taking he has to repress it. The progress of an artist is a continual self-sacrifice, and a continual extinction of personality .But according to him it is the duty of the poet to discard the touch of personality in his work: and as a result a new form will come out from the fusion of the past and the present. For the sconed aspect, Eliot shows that the poet`s greatness lies on putting his personality into his poetry. That means the poet may have a liking , disliking ,and may fill interesting in any thing but he shouldn’t put it in his poetry. Also ,he must have a varied feelings and liberty in order to enter into new combinat
¨His rejection of Wordsworth: ¨ As we know that Wordsworth said that the poetry is an Wordsworth said that poetry was an overflow of powerful emotions and its origin is in “Emotions recollected in tranquility” .Eliot rejects this definition by his saying that the poetry is an escape of emotions and personality .The poet is only a catalytic agent that fuses varied emotions into new wholes. He distinguishes between the emotions of the poet and the artistic emotion, and points out that the function of criticism is to turn attention from the poet to his poetry. Also, his views on the nature of poetic process are equally revolutionary. poetry is not inspiration, it is organization. The poet’s mind is like a vessel in which are stored numerous feelings, emotions and experiences.
