2. Course content
General English provides a directed review of English language skills with an emphasis on the reinforcement and expansion of comprehension through practice in reading plus complementary work on listening, speaking and writing skills.
3. Course rationale

This course allows students to reinforce and expand language skills needed to:
1. Understand English used in later course work
2. Consult English references
3. Move to more advanced English courses

4. Course objectives
By the end of the course the student will be able to:
a) Demonstrate comprehension of written English
b) Show command of English structural patterns in context
c) Demonstrate comprehension of English vocabulary in dialogues and texts
d) Write effective responses to questions or controlled prompts regarding passages in English

5. Teaching methods
The following methods are employed:
1. Text-based practice and explanation by the teacher
2. Discussion of texts covered in class
3. Presentation and practice of vocabulary from the texts
4. Regular homework assignments based on class texts and class practice


6. Course evaluation

Assessment is according to the following scale:
a) Attendance / participation in classwork 10%
b) Short tests (quizzes) 20%
c) Midterm exam 20%
d) Final exam 50%
