A really competent critic of poetry must have a number of qualities. He must be both poetical and philosophical. His affections must be free and kindly. His understanding must be clear and his judgment dispassionate. His vision must not be clouded by his prejudices, literary, personal or religious. His sensibility must have been trained by a continuous study of poetry and he must be of a mature age.
