When we r talking about public confession, it is related to the witchcraft trials and how people were accused for being witches depending on false and illogical proofs in Salem, Massatchussets during that period in which the crucible takes place. people had two choices only; they had either to confess this crime even if they were innocent, or they had to face death sentence. Actually, confessing a rime that one didn't do is seriously difficult. In both cases; confessing or denying, he is a looser. To clarify this, let's consider the character of John Proctor. He is a very moral, respectful person despite his only sin that's his affair with Abigail Williams. His self-esteem and self conscious mean a lot to him. His name is very important to him this is shown when he said that he wouldn't have another name in his life if he blackened it by confessing witchcraft. The other accused characters in the play differ in the degree of their self conscious; some of them accepted to confess the crime to escape death, bt other refused and preffered to keep their reputation.
this is my own explanation, dear... i wish u benefit from it...good luck and try to elaborate on it...
