بالنسبه للراوي واصدقائه المسافرين , نهر التايمز يستحضر صور المستكشفين البريطانيين المشهورين الذين انطلقوا من هذا النهر في رحلات مجيده . حكى الراوي انجازات هؤلاء المستكشفين بنبرة احتفاليه مباهيه , مسميا ايهم ب (( knight-errants(( موضحا ان تلك الرحلات خدمت مقاصد عظيمه . رأي الراوي بان هؤلاء الرجال عززوا مجد بريطانيا ووسعوا نطاق المعرفه بالكون وساهموا في تحضر وتنوير بقية الكون .
