this is concerning Bakhtin's theory as i received from one of Dr salah's students...wish it benefits u
According to Bakhtin, in a good work of art there should be more than one voice. The beauty of a work of art results from the conflict between these voices. These conflicting voices could be those of the characters or narrators. In Heart of Darkness there are the anti-colonial voices of Marlow, the novel’s main character, and the narrator’s. In contrast to this anti-colonial point of view, we have the traditional colonial viewpoint held by Marlow’s aunt and Kurtz. She sees Marlow as “something like an emissary of light”. She talks to Marlow about weaving those ignorant millions from their horrid way”. Kurtz represents the imperialists and defends the exploitation of the undeveloped countries by the first world countries.
