About this course
This course is for UK and international graduates with no or limited professional teaching experience who plan to follow or develop a career in English language teaching.
Through this course you become an informed, inquiring and confident teacher through reflective engagement with your learning and teaching over the year.
You gain critical and reflective understanding of English language classroom practice and research skills.
The course draws on and incorporates international settings allowing you to experience and evaluate a range of teaching and assessment methods and prepare you for teaching in the international context.
You develop your skills in
• critically evaluating areas of theory and practice in English language teaching
• applying knowledge to lesson planning and developing learning materials for a range of learners
• developing and evaluating research instruments and data analysis
• reflecting critically on your development as a teacher and classroom researcher
• completing a research project in a topic of your choice
While studying, you produce a portfolio of assignments, lesson plans, materials and a development plan which will be a useful resource for future employment and professional development.
Associated careers
You gain the skills and knowledge to work in international language teaching institutions. There is currently a growing demand for teachers of English as a global language.
Entry requirements
An honours degree or equivalent containing a significant element of English Language or English Language teaching or education.
You may be asked to take part in a telephone interview.
If English is not your first language you typically need an IELTS 6.5 score with a minimum of 6.0 in reading and writing and 5.5 in all other skills or equivalent. If your English language skill is currently below IELTS 6.5 we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score.
Course content
Modules
Language systems and analysis
You study the categorising and describing of English language systems, looking at differing approaches to language analysis and their impact on teaching.
Second language acquisition
You explore and critically review theories of second language acquisition, and the impact these have on approaches to viewing language itself and theories of teaching.
English language teaching methodology
You study models of language teaching methods and approaches, and the link between theory and practice. You gain experience and analysis of direct learning through key methods.
Sociolinguistics of the English language
This module looks at key sociolinguistic concepts on the role of English in the world today and impact on teaching. You study major historical, social and political influences on developing English in the world.
Developing as an English language teacher
You study approaches to teacher development through reflecting on your own development as a language teacher. You focus on professional skills learned during the course, and approaches to continuing professional development in the workplace.
English language teaching materials
You apply your understanding of language and language learning theories and practices through evaluation and the design of learning activities and materials.
Research project
This is an extended piece of research into an aspect of English language teaching, assessed by a research proposal and a 10–12,000 word dissertation
