The theme of spenser's The Shepherd Calendar is conventional ,but the importance of the poem comes from its being experimental , explain giving examples .

The poem consists of 12 eclogues . It is a pastoral poem that speaks about shepherds . Each eclogue is named after a month of the year . each eclogue has a preface to introduce it and a picture to show its theme. The poem is divided into three groups according to the theme . one of the best eclogues is October . the theme of October deals with the responsibility of the poet

There is a commentary before each eclogue written by a man who signed his name as E.K .

Spenser borrowed the pastoral poetry from the Roman but he insisted on his Englishness by using the language of Chaucer ,and by criticizing his own society and satirizing sharply the religious and political issues of his days .
