Compounds
Definition:
A unit of vocabulary which consists of more than one lexical stem. On the surface, there appear to be two (or more) lexemes present, but in fact the parts are functioning as a single item, which has its own meaning and grammar. It is pronounced as a unit with a single main stress, and used grammatically as a unit- its plural, for example, is flower-pots and not *flowers-pots. The unity is also signaled by the orthography, which is not always a reliable criterion. Compounds are classified into types based on the kind of grammatical meaning they represent. This combining process is very common in languages like English and German, and much less common in French and Spanish. Compounding and composition are alternative terms for the process of forming compounds
