Enactment is the first word one must take count *of an estimate of his views. It is the notion that works of art act their moral judgment. It is brought out in an attempt to assess the limitations of Jonson Augustans' mind and sensibility was confronted with Shakespeare's characteristics use of language. Works of art enact their moral evaluation. They do so generally not by deploying words to reinforce a didactic intention but by a specifically poetic use of language which Leavis characterizes as the poetic creator.

Leavis is insisting on a conception of literature which has relevance and value for other things beside literature. a vitalizing recourse of concrete concern living as well as reading for writing. Leavis goes on to talk not about intentions and the correct way of bringing them into art but bout language and about the kind of inner life which it must maintain a contact if it is to be at all capable of registering the source of valuation which literature exists to register. This concern of life is a concern for a moral poetic vitality which can have varying manifestation.

The word enactment implies that good poetry embodies enacts a valuation of a reality at once inner and outer. To enact a valuation is to realize whatever is evaluated. It is to bring us into an immediate living relation to reality. *
