سألته عن درس Indirect Illocution
سـؤالـي هو
Dr. What's indirect illocution ??
Is it order person to do things now ,isn't it ??
أجابنـي الدكتور :
It basically means saying something in an indirect way, and by saying it, you perform an action.
For example, if you tell someone "Can you please pass the salt?" You are directly asking him a question, and indirectly requesting something from him. The action of indirectly requesting something performed by saying the previous example is what we call indirect illocution. Illocutions, both direct and indirect, perform a lot of actions including: requesting, ordering, warning, thanking.... etc.
يعنــي
اي عبارة يقولها الشخص ممكن تستخدم لأداء غرض معين. مثلاً السؤال عن شي او طلب شيء. بعض العبارات ممكن تؤدي غرض واحد فقط مباشر، مثلاً "اعطني القلم" تؤدي غرض الطلب، و "اين محمد؟" تؤدي غرض السؤال. هناك عبارات اخرى تحتوي غرضين مثلاً "هل من الممكن ان تعطيني القلم؟" هنا غرض مباشر (السؤال) و غرض غير مباشر (الطلب). عادة الغرض المباشر ممكن معرفته بقراءة العبارة حرفياً (معاني الكلمات+القواعد)، والغرض غير المباشر يستنتج من ماوراء الكلمات بدون النظر الى المعنى الحرفي للعبارة.
و سألتـه :
And indirect / direct directive is not different meaning from indirect/ direct illocution , is it ??

As for directives and commissives, they are types of illocution. So, we can have direct directive illocution+indirect directive illocution and also direct commissive illocution+indirect commissive illocution. I gave plenty of examples about these at the end of lecture 12.
