ملخص النجليزي المحاضره الثانيه

Welcome to General English 101

In our previous introductory lecture we said that we will expand on some of the constructions we revised.

Today we will expand on the simple present tense. Do you remember this sentence?

He drives to work everyday.

Let us move on now and remind you of some basic ideas.

The English sentence usually has this form:
Ahmed reads a newspaper every morning.Subject Verb Object

Pay attention to two important facts:
1. Ahmad is singular (meaning one).
2. The verb (read) is in the present tense.

Therefore:
If you have a singular subject and you want to use a verb in the present form:

REMEMBER TO…..
Add an s on the verb

Let us try this again with the following words.
-Ali
-Play
-football

Ali: is singular
Play: is a verb in the present form
Therefore the sentence should be something like this:

Ali plays football.

OK !
Now it’s your turn.
Try to use the following words to form a sentence in the present simple tense.
She/ sleep/ at 7 o’clock

If this is what you wrote;
She sleeps at 7 o’clock.
Then your answer is
Correct !!

Now let us see what happens if your subject is plural (more than one).
Ali and Sarah walk to school.
Notice !!
There is no s on the verb walk.
Why…??

Because the subject is plural(more than one).
Now you try !
Use the following words.
They/ eat/ eggs for breakfast.

If your answer was:
They eat eggs for breakfast.
Then your answer is correct.
Notice !!
There is no s on the verb eat.
Why??

Because the subject (They) is plural.

Therefore:
If the subject is singular use an s with the verb. However, if the subject is plural, do not use an s with the verb.

Do not forget:
The simple present tense is used when you want to talk about something that happens generally, or as a habit.

Now let us do some more exercises.
He ____ English.
a. study
b. studies

Which answer would you choose?

If you chose:
b. Studies

Your answer is correct !!

One more time !
We _____ football.
a. play
b. plays

The correct answer is:
a. play

The following are a list of verbs that I would like you to use in forming sentences in the present tense.
drink
eat
come
write
speak

Use each verb once with a singular subject and another with a plural subject.

For example:

Ali eats a lot.
Ali and Ahmed eat a lot.

We will stop here
See you soon

THANK YOU
