Speed

Laser printers produce a whole page at a time; manufacturers rate their speed in terms of pages per minute. Typical speeds for desktop laser printers range from 4 to 50 ppm, with complex, graphic-laden pages taking longer to print than simple memos. Dot matrix printers are rated in characters per second; the printer produces one character at a time, sweeping the print head back and forth rapidly across the page. Print speeds for dot-matrix models range from about 50 to 500 cps. Generally, laser printers are faster than those using dot-matrix technology.
