Introduction to the background of the
sixteenth century: Humanism &
Reformation
Students are given an orientation to the course and the general rules of grading and attendance (5 marks for participation). They are also asked to prepare sonnets and to read them before each lecture. Further individual assignments are graded out of
(2 bonus marks ) as an encouragement to active students

An introduction to Elements of poetry and Figurative language.
Students are divided into groups to perform assignments and presentations throughout the term.

The English Sonnet
Thomas Wyatt: “My galley charged with forgetfulness”
* A Quiz that evaluates the students’ knowledge of the elements of poetry and figurative language. They are encouraged to correct each other’s papers.
-The Renaissance concept of Imitation is discussed.

-Howard, Earl of Surrey: “O Happy Dames,. .” (A brief discussion is to be done thoroughly and a short essay homework is required)

-An oral discussion compares the concepts of Love and Imitation in Wyatt’s two sonnets
*A paraphrase is marked out of 2 marks (bonus marks- best answers only).

Time, Love, imitation as Elizabethan themes are the subject of a comparison between the sonnets of Shakespeare and Marlow, and Shakespeare’s two sonnets.
- Final Exam Rules and class inputs/outputs in an open discussion
Students are encouraged to participate in a conclusive comparison that reads the Age and connect the sonnets and the poets together.
