Hey dear fellow students :) ... Congratulations on the beginning of this semester
Now regarding the mentioned above subject , the reason of me writing this is discussing some points in lecture 3 because i believe that discussing lectures could improve our English communication skills and knowledge.
In lecture 3 the main theme of the lecture is reading strategies among other points , one of them is "The main Idea of a paragraph" . Concerning this point we have taken an exercise on how to extract the main idea of a paragraph on page 18 & 19. On page 19 section 3 Paragraph C there is a paragraph " Traditionally the stranger has though of Canada as a mountainous snow-swept land. Certainly it can get very cold in Canada . Few non-Canadians understand that it can also get very hot . The eastern cities suffer in the humidity of July and August , and people actually die each year from the heat"
now the author gave us 3 choices for this paragraph
A- it can get very cold in Canada
B-It can get very hot in Canada
C- Eastern cities suffer more than western cities
Mr. Fraidan gave us the answer which is C and he mentioned that the 3 choices can be all correct and that this is a misleading type of questions that he will not follow it's pattern in the final exam. Now my opinion is B is the correct answer and i will prove why..
first of all what is the main idea of a paragraph?? , it's why the author wrote this paragraph and it's certainly not to tell us that Canada is very cold , because it's a common knowledge everybody knows that Canada is cold, so A is not a correct answer. I believe that the whole paragraph is to explain how Non-Canadians always thought of Canada as a cold country and for this reason he tried to explain how it can get very hot in Canada that it actually killed people!!!! now Choice C is to tell us that Eastren cities suffer more than western cities , now I believe that this line is not correct because the author didn't mention anything about western cities as a matter of fact we can not prove that this line is right from the paragraph!!!!
In conclusion the whole passage is all about HEAT, people die from heat and Non-Canadians don't know that Canada can get hot, so B is the correct choice..
of course this is my own opinion and i am all open to your opinions ,as a matter of fact that main purpose of this whole participation is to see what you guys have to say about it...
Awaiting for your kind opinions and interpretations
