Grammar: Simple Past Tense
Read the following Paragraph. Underline the verbs that tell about the past. Then answer the questions.
Ben Holmes started the Farm School in 1991. Holmes, a city kid from California, spent summers on his uncle’s farm in Ohio. There he learned to love working on the land. He created the school because he wanted to teach kids that work is about using your body and your mind together.
Regular Verbs
To form the simple past tense for regular verbs, add –ed to the base form.
For example:
want à wanted
If the verb ends in (e), add only –d.
For example:
arrive à arrived
If the verb ends in (consonant + y), change the y to i and then add –ed.
For example:
study àstudi à studied
Irregular Verbs
Irregular verbs really don’t have a rule. That’s why they’re called “irregular”. Here are some examples:
eat à ate
go à went
make à made
say à said
