Declarative ;
1. The yeast eat the sugar
2. It produced carbon dioxide

Imperative;
1. Dessolve the yeaslin ( warm water).
2. Mix the flour with cornstarch

في my first introdiction
emotion and pation
emotion:is long lasting like love intense.
pation:it is afew minutes or seconds.like angry.

1-What is narrative prose? Writing that tells a story. Non-poetic writing
2-A Comparison or Contrast essay is an essay in which you either compare something or contrast something. A comparison essay is an essay in which you emphasize the similarities, and a contrast essay is an essay in which you emphasize the differences. We use comparison and contrast thinking when deciding which university to attend, which car to buy, or whether to drive a car or take a bus or an airplane to a vacation site.
3-Descriptive prose is simply writing that describes or gives a picture of a scene. Some writer descriptions of the setting in which their story is situated before any action takes place or any dialogue.
You can decipher the tone through analyzing the diction, subject matter, and syntax of the piece. For example, if the author uses many short sentences, they may be detached from the subject matter. If they are also writing about something emotional, then you could describe the tone as "detached" .
The tone of a literary work is difficult to describe. I'd say it is the feeling the author's words portray. For example, an essay can be written in an angry, critical tone.
Irony of tone is the contrast between the narrators words and what actually happens.
. A literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit. .

Passionate Shepherd to His Love

The speaker addresses his beloved. He is not proposing for marriage. He is proposing her to be his beloved. He is inviting her to come. He will offer her all the pleasures in life. He will offer her a bed of roses, a cap of flowers, a gown of the finest wool. He will get the wool from his sheep. He lives in the country. So, here, we have pastoralرعوى setting= related to the country side, to the life of shepherds

COME live with me and be my Love,

And we will all the pleasures prove

That hills and valleys, dale and field,

And all the craggy mountains yield.

What kind of love, what kind of offer is he going to give her?

He is going to give her all the romantic pleasures to enjoy materialistic kind of love.

There is direct address COME live with me

Pleasures= physical joys, not spiritual.

These pleasures are physical not spiritualروحانى. They will try all kinds of pleasures.

hills and valleys, dale and field,

And all the craggy mountains yield.

Here, he is describing nature, the beautiful nature of surrounding.

They are going to enjoy sight seeing, walking in the valleys.

There are hills, valleys, mountains, grooves. We have raw –untamed nature= untouched by man; not cultivated nature.

He is going to take her to the valleys, to the grooves, to the fields, to the woods, to the mountains. He is going to take her and show her all the pleasures of the pastoral life.

In the first stanza, the speaker invites his beloved to come and to live with him, to be his love. Here, we have a direct seductionخداع- اغراء. He is seducing her. He tries to attract her attention with the pleasures of life.

Here, we have a seductive tone.

They will enjoy all the pleasures of the pastoral natural beauty of the setting.

There will we sit upon the rocks 5

And see the shepherds feed their flocks,

By shallow rivers, to whose falls

Melodious birds sing madrigals.

They will sit upon the rocks; watch the shepherdsراعى feeding their flocks. They will hear the music of nature; the singing of the birds, the flowing of the rivers. The sound of water is a beautiful natural music.

madrigals= songs without music.

This is one of the actions they are going to do; to set on the rocks, to watch the shepherd take care of their sheep, to listen to the music of nature, the sound of the water falls and the sound of the signing birds.

There will I make thee beds of roses

And a thousand fragrant posies, 10

A cap of flowers, and a kirtle

Embroider'd all with leaves of myrtle.

In this stanza, we have the promises he gives her. He promises her that he will make her a bed of roses.

posies= kinds of flowers

It is a beautiful seductive atmosphere. He is going to make her a cap of flowers and a kirtle= gown of flowers.

Myrtle= a kind of trees with shiny small flowers that has a beautiful scent.

The flowery dress he is going to make her is embroidered مطرزwith the myrtle so that it will give her a kind of shining. It will be glittering with all of the beautiful flowers of nature.

We should notice the innocence and the simplicity بساطةof the speaker here. He is not going to give her diamonds or gold because he is a shepherd, a poor man. He lives in nature. All the riches that he owns are from nature.

A gown made of the finest wool

Which from our pretty lambs we pull,

Fair linèd slippers for the cold, 15

With buckles of the purest gold.

It is winter, it is very cold. He is going to make her a gown made of the finest wool to warm her body in winter. He is going to take the wool from his lambs. It is going to be very soft and very warm.

He will not leave her feet cold. He will make her slippers for the cold. They are going to be lined with wool. He is going to decorate the slippers حذاءwith buckles of the purest gold. These are all the beautiful gifts he is going to offer her. He is going to give her more gifts.

A belt of straw and ivy buds

With coral clasps and amber studs:

And if these pleasures may thee move,

Come live with me and be my Love.

20

He is going to make her a belt that will surround her waist to protect her. This belt is not made of leather. It is made of straw of hay. It has ivy buds= small flowers.

With coral clasps and amber studs

He is going to make claspsمشبك for the belt made of coralالمرجان. He is going to decorate it with amberعنبر studsمجوهرات.

All the elements he is using are natural elements. We have a colorful image.

Thy silver dishes for thy meat

As precious as the gods do eat,

Shall on an ivory table be

Prepared each day for thee and me.

The shepherd swains shall dance and sing 25

For thy delight each May-morning:

If these delights thy mind may move,

Then live with me and be my Love.

They will not be alone. They will have the company of the shepherds. They will join them and provide them with pleasure and company. He is not going to live with her alone in this beautiful nature.

If all of these delights will make her to decide , she will live with him and be his love.

It is a very beautiful pastoral lyrical poem. It expresses a kind of sincere مخلصmood. The speaker here is not tricking يخدعthe lady. The invitation is sincere because he is a shepherd who lives in nature.

The poem has a seductive tone. We do not have any response of the lady.

The argument in the poem seems to be a dreamy fancy of the speaker. As if he is sure that his beloved will accept this imaginative world.

The world of the poem is a world of simplicity. It is a simple world. It is a world of love' a very beautiful world.

In the pastoral lyric, it seems timeless. This is the pastoral life. It is always timeless. There is no limit of the time. It is continuous into the pastoral setting.

The poet is trying to idealize the setting he is living in by showing all these pleasures. It is as if there are no hardshipsصعاب. The poet makes the life of the shepherd a world of fantasyخيال, of pleasure.

The poet- Marlowe is an urban مدنىcitizen who lives in the city. Most of the urban citizens think of the life of the country as a world of blessنعمة, a world of heaven because city life is full of stresses and difficulties but the country life is more symbol.

Q- What is the theme of the poem?

The theme of the poem is Cartesian = a Latin word that means = seize ينتهز الفرصةthe day= make use of the moment.

the poet has talked about the ideal life of the countryside as it is close to nature- the untamed nature= nature that is not touched by man; pure nature that is full of innocence, beauty, with great gifts of nature.

The poem is written in 6 stanzas. It is written in couplets.

We have some kind of repetition.

Come live with me and be my Love.

It is the first line of the poem, then it is repeated in the last two stanzas as a refrain= a line that occurs at the end of each stanza repeatedly. It is either a word, phrase or a line or a couple of lines that is repeated at the end of every stanza.

Here, we have the first line of the poem repeated after many stanzas at the last and before the last stanza. He repeated his invitation twice to make her condensed.

The first line in the poem, he invites her. Then he repeated the lines after he showed her the actions they are going to do, the promises, the gifts he is going to give her. Then he repeats the line again, the invitation again to emphasize his invitation and to show that he in sincere, that he is not a playful lover, to show that he is honest in his invitation, faithful in his love.

The language is so informal- very simple kind of language because it is a pastoral lyric; things that are related to nature.

We have several images, color images.

SONNET 73

PARAPHRASE

That time of year thou mayst in me behold

In me you can see that time of year

When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang

When a few yellow leaves or none at all hang

Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,

On the branches, shaking against the cold,

Bare ruin'd choirs, where late the sweet birds sang.

Bare ruins of church choirs where lately the sweet birds sang.

In me thou seest the twilight of such day

In me you can see only the dim light that remains

As after sunset fadeth in the west,

After the sun sets in the west,

Which by and by black night doth take away,

Which is soon extinguished by black night,

Death's second self, that seals up all in rest.

The image of death that envelops all in rest.

In me thou see'st the glowing of such fire

I am like a glowing ember

That on the ashes of his youth doth lie,

Lying on the dying flame of my youth,

As the death-bed whereon it must expire,

As on the death bed where it must finally expire,

Consum'd with that which it was nourish'd by.

Consumed by that which once fed it.

This thou perceivest, which makes thy love more strong,

This you sense, and it makes your love more determined

To love that well which thou must leave ere long.

Causing you to love that which you must give up before long.

Here we have a speaker who is talking about time. Time is preciousقيم. Time is passing. We can never restore a second. It is a kind of a wheel.

That time of year thou mayst in me behold

When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang

Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,

Bare ruin'd choirs, where late the sweet birds sang.

It is like a series, a chain, small circles connected together.

First, he talks about the time of year. He is referring to a stage in his life. It is autumn that presents a stage in man's life that is old age= the stage of decay

What happens in nature in autumn?

The leaves turn into yellow, then brownish and they fall.

Autumn is a season of decay, a season of old age.

The speaker here is addressing someone saying that he can see in him that time of year. He compares himself to late autumn. Autumn is a season of barenessتجرد= no productivity of nature. He compares himself to the season of autumn which is a season of bareness- no leaves, no fruit.

In autumn, we could see the trees as barren, nicked, very few leaves or merely no leaves, or yellow leaves.

Autumn is a cold season. When cold wind comes, it shakes the trees and all of the boughs of all the leaves.

choirs= group of young children in the church who sing.

Bare ruin'd choirs= destroyed.

He is talking about churches with no singers, churches that are deserted. It is like a ruin= a place that is deserted, destroyed. This is church with no choirs is a barren church. No body comes. No body is singing. The birds here are associated with a choir. A choir in the church is like birds singing.

These are visual images.

The main idea in the first quatrain is that the speaker compares himself to the autumn season; an indication of bareness and decay.

In me thou seest the twilight of such day

As after sunset fadeth in the west,

Which by and by black night doth take away,

Death's second self, that seals up all in rest.

twilight= a time when the day starts to end and the dark approaches. It is an indication of the death of the day. In him, he can see that time of day. When the sun sets, the lights of the day start to creep and go down. It is conquered by the arrival of the night.
black night= the night is described like a warrior that is taking over, controlling.
Death's second self= it is a metaphor. The night is like death's second self. The night is associated with death. The black night is like death's second self.

The language is metaphorical.

In the first quatrain, he compares himself to the late autumn- a season in nature that represents decay and old age.

In the second quatrain, he moves to the day, how time changes; at the end of the day, the twilight, when the sun sets غروب الشمسand the night takes over. It is the ending of the time. Time is passing; the hours of the day are passing.

In me thou see'st the glowing of such fire

That on the ashes of his youth doth lie,

As the death-bed whereon it must expire,

Consum'd with that which it was nourish'd by.

We can not start a fire with ashesرماد. Fire can not be reborn out of its ashes. The fire is consumed .when there is no wood, no food, the fire will end. The ashes are like the death bed- the coffin of the fire. The wood that once was the food, it helps the fire to be consumedتستهلك.
The idea in the third quatrain is that the speaker here lost his power, his energy when youth is passed.

This thou perceivest, which makes thy love more strong,

To love that well which thou must leave ere long.

perceive= to have a conception about something
It is love in general. One's love should be stronger. It should go stronger by the passing of time. One should seize the chance to love because time is running. Time is going on. It never stops.

The themes of the whole poem are about the passing of time.

The couplet is addressed to a friend of the poet and to the poet himself. The speaker here is Shakespeare himself- not to lose- not to waste time.

The sonnet focuses on the narrator's anxiety. The speaker is in great anxiety over growing old. Each quatrain compares "the time of year " with various examples of passing time in nature.

The metaphors are shortened in duration from month, hours and to minutes.

The poem is metaphorical, rich of metaphors. There are so many visual images, tactile imagery- that make the poem beautiful.

The language is metaphorical. It is written in iambic pentameter.

Sonnet 12
Original Text
Modern Text
When I do count the clock that tells the time,
And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;
When I behold the violet past prime,
And sable curls all silvered o'er with white;
When lofty trees I see barren of leaves,
Which erst from heat did canopy the herd,
And summer’s green all girded up in sheaves
Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard;
Then of thy beauty do I question make,
That thou among the wastes of time must go,
Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake
And die as fast as they see others grow,
And nothing 'gainst Time’s scythe can make defense
Save breed to brave him when he takes thee hence.
When I look at the clock and notice time ticking away, and see splendid day sink into hideous night; when I see the violet wilt and curly black hair turn white with age; when I see tall trees that once provided shade for herds now barren of leaves, and the summer’s crops tied up and hauled to the barn as if summer itself were an old man being carried off to his grave—then I have doubts about the fate of your beauty, since you too will have to undergo the ravages of time. Sweet and beautiful creatures don’t stay that way; they die as fast as they see others grow. And there’s no defense against Time’s destructive power, except perhaps to have children—to defy Time when he takes you away.

The most significant word here is TIME
The sonneteer is establishing a kind of parallel method of measuring the passage of time in different things. .
When I do count the clock that tells the time,

The speaker is in a state of counting the clock that tells the time. Here, he is talking about the day- the cycle of nature.
First of all, he started with time in general. Then he discusses day and night. He started with the day. And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;
He personified the day as a brave man because he is going to face night. He is going to die.
Night is described as hideous, horrible. he is giving antitheses- contrast between hideous and brave, day and night.
The clock tells about the passage of time. The day is dying. it sunk in the hideous night. This is the cycle of night.
When I behold the violet past prime,

Violet= is a kind of flower that dies at the end of the season. They can not survive a season; can not live longer than a season. This is the cycle of nature. The violet has to die.
And sable curls all silvered o'er with white;

Sable= dark black curls of hair, when man gets old, they turn into white.
Nature has a cycle of birth, growth and death. Every thing in nature passes this circle- time- man- plants ……. all of these cycles are collected together.
in the first stanza, we could see the sequence, the passage of time , day goes to night, flowers die, black hair turns into white….. This is all about the passage of time in nature and in youth as well, life = birth- growth- decay- death . in the first quatrain, he concentrates on the day
2nd quatrain;
When lofty trees I see barren of leaves,
Which erst from heat did canopy the herd,

He concentrates on nature . All of the leaves die. Trees are there naked. the trees are barren. There are no leaves on the trees
erst= former- before canopy= covering
During summer, these trees with rich green leaves used to provide shield for the sheep , to protect them from the heat of the sun. But now, in autumn season, there are no more leaves.
And summer’s green all girded up in sheaves
Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard;

Sheaves= bundle- bunch
It is the harvest time, the time of collecting fruits. Summer is a season of harvest. The green leaves are now taken. There are no leaves.
bier= cart- carriage in which fruits are taken to the market
bristly= coarse- thick – stiff = the farmer is an aged man who is talking the cart to the market
Here, we have a progression of season, autumn then summer which is the harvest season. This is the cycle of nature
Then of thy beauty do I question make,
That thou among the wastes of time must go,
Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake
And die as fast as they see others grow,

thy= your
He is addressing the young man. He is part of the cycle of nature. He is going to grow old. His beauty will fade away.
Time is passing. It can not be preserved. It can not be retreated. Time is moving. All of the beauties in nature change. They die as they see others grow. His beauty can not be preserved for ever. It is similar to the cycle of nature.

And nothing 'gainst Time’s scythe can make defense
Save breed to brave him when he takes thee hence.

scythe = منجل

Time here is personified as a human being with a scythe cutting it continuously because time is always moving. Nothing can stand against it. Time is personified as a powerful human being; no body could stand against this courageous, powerful strong time.
breed= offspring
The only way that we can defy time, to stand against it is by marrying and having offspring. Marriage is the only way to preserve his beauty.
The speaker is concise. He is going to have offspring to defy time. He will die. Before he dies, he should bring offspring to preserve his features.
The couplet here says that nothing can stand against time.
The poet urges his friend to have children who will carry his name, inherit his beauty, his qualities. This is a way of resisting the pass of time.
The sonnet establishes a kind of parallelism, a parallel method of measuring time, nature and youth.
Time is passing; it has its own cycle. Youth grows old and then die.
This is the idea of dying and decay.
What is the theme of the sonnet?
It is the theme of time and mutability, change .
It is written in Shakespearian structure; three quatrains and a couplet. Each quatrain begins with a clause. These clauses reflect the change of time.
We have a lot of musical devices

Act I Scene I
Iago is talking to Roderigo. Iago is expressing that he hates Othello. He gives his reasons why he hates Othello.
Roderigo wants to woo Desdemona but she falls in love and marries Othello.
Enter RODMERIGO and IAGO
RODERIGO and IAGO enter.
RODERIGO
Tush! Never tell me. I take it much unkindly
That thou, Iago, who hast had my purse
As if the strings were thine, shouldst know of this.
RODERIGO
Come on, don’t tell me that. I don’t like it that you knew about this, Iago. All this time I’ve thought you were such a good friend that I’ve let you spend my money as if it was yours.
IAGO
'Sblood, but you’ll not hear me! If ever I did dream of such a matter, abhor me.
IAGO
Damn it, you’re not listening to me! I never dreamed this was happening—if you find out I did, you can go ahead and hate me.
RODERIGO
Thou told’st me
Thou didst hold him in thy hate.
RODERIGO
You told me you hated him.

OTHELLO
Her father loved me, oft invited me,
Still questioned me the story of my life
From year to year, the battles, sieges, fortunes,
That I have passed.
I ran it through, even from my boyish days,
To th' very moment that he bade me tell it,
Wherein I spoke of most disastrous chances,
Of moving accidents by flood and field,
Of hair-breadth ’scapes i' th' imminent deadly breach,
Of being taken by the insolent foe
And sold to slavery, of my redemption thence
And portance in my traveler’s history.
Wherein of antres vast and deserts idle,
Rough quarries, rocks, hills whose heads touch heaven
It was my hint to speak—such was my process—
And of the Cannibals that each others eat,
The Anthropophagi, and men whose heads
Grew beneath their shoulders. These things to hear
Would Desdemona seriously incline.

Desdemona's father loved him so much. He used to invite him to his house to listen to his story of life and all the battles he fought. He told him all his adventures in life. He told him how he was captured and sold as a slave, how he bought his freedom, and how he wandered through caves and deserts. He was able to tell him about cannibals أكلى لحوم البشرwho eat each other, and men with heads growing below their shoulders. When he talked about all these things, Desdemona used to listen attentivelyباهتمام. If she had to go do some household dutyأعمال منزلية, he noticed that she’d always come back quickly to hear more of his stories. When he was relaxing, she’d pull him aside and ask to hear some part of a story she had missed. Her eyes would fill with tears at the bad things he went through in his younger years. When his stories were done, she’d sigh and tell him how strangely wonderful and sad his life had been. She said she wished she hadn’t heard it, but she also wished there was a man like him for her. She thanked him and told him that if a friend of him had a story like him to tell, she’d fall in love with him. He took the hint and spoke to her. She said she loved him for the dangers he’d survived, and he loved her for feeling such strong emotions about him. That’s the only witchcraft he ever used. She loved him for the adventures he passed. He loved her as she showed pity on him

IAGO
Thus do I ever make my fool my purse.
For I mine own gained knowledge should profane
If I would time expend with such a snipe
But for my sport and profit. I hate the Moor,
And it is thought abroad that ’twixt my sheets
He’s done my office. I know not if ’t be true,
But I, for mere suspicion in that kind,
Will do as if for surety. He holds me well.
The better shall my purpose work on him.
Cassio’s a proper man. Let me see now

To get his place and to plume up my will
In double knavery. How? How? Let’s see.

This is Iago's plan how he is going to take revenge from Othello. There were rumors that Othello betrayed Iago with his wife. This is another reason why he hates Othello. He is going to sue Cassio to arouse Othello's jealousy for Desdemona making him believe that his wife betrays him with Cassio. He thinks that The Moor is open and straightforward. He thinks any man who seems honest is honest. People like that are easy to manipulate.

Roderigo enters, upset that he has been beaten and angry because Iago has taken all his money and left Roderigo nothing to show for it. Iago advises him to be patient and not to return to Venice, reminding him that they have to work by their wits. He assures Roderigo that everything is going according to plan. After telling Roderigo to go, Iago finishes telling the audience the plot that is to come: he will convince Emilia to speak to Desdemona on Cassio’s behalf, and he will arrange for Othello to witness Cassio’s suit to Desdemona.

OTHELLO
I gave her such a one, ’twas my first gift.
IAGO
I know not that, but such a handkerchief—
I am sure it was your wife’s—did I today
See Cassio wipe his beard with.
OTHELLO
If it be that—
IAGO
If it be that, or any that was hers,
It speaks against her with the other proofs.

Iago tells him that he saw Desdemona's handkerchief with Cassio. It was Othello's first gift for Desdemona. It is another proof that Iago is using to prove Desdemona's infidelity for Othello.

Iago is the character of the tragedy and all other characters in the drama place second to him.
Othello is filled of jealousy. He can not understand Desdemona.
Othello is the tragic hero as he has a tragic flaw. Iago is a supporting character. He is the director of tragedy. He is quite successful in his planning. He is envious not being given the position of the lieutenant. But inside him there is racial viceness. Iago is rejected by the Moor. He is using Cassio and Othello. Iago is in full control of the plot. If he is not in the drama, it will not move in such a way. He understands the human psychology. He is trying to dismiss Cassio. He arouses jealousy in Othello. He urges his wife Emilia to steal the handkerchief of Desdemona. From the beginning to the end, we can see that he is the character of the tragedy.
· Othello- the hero of the drama: he does not apply his mind. He confesses at the end of the drama that he loves Desdemona sincerely and dearly but not wisely. He fully relied on Iago who continued to inject the roses of jealousy gaining no pause to his victim for self reflection. If Othello is powerful, he should examine it. He could not find out the truth. It is only fate- destiny that would not let him. Jealousy him destroyed the life of Desdemona and of himself. He could not overcome his jealousy.
He is a moor. He is a general.
· In all the tragedies, Iago is the greatest villain. He conducts so many evil actions.
· the role of Handkertrchief: it had been given to Othello by his mother . It had been given to her by his father. Othello gave it to his wife. It is called the fatal handkerchief. It is one of the Egyptian charmers. On the handkerchief there is the design of a strawberry.
· Othello has superstition in magic supposed to be on this design of the handkerchief. It is the first love token that he gave to his wife. This little thing becomes an instrument to establish the end of Desdemona.
· Accident and chance play role in Shakespearian tragedies. This is sin in Othello. What Iago has in mind, in his plan, he fulfils. Accident and chance helps Iago to carry on his plan. It is by accident that Desdemona dropped her handkerchief.

Q- what are the works that affected Spenser when he wrote the poem farie queen?
Spenser read a lot. He was fond of Chaucer. He was influenced by the classical works of the Roman and the Greeks. He was influenced by Italian poets. In his work, we will find many references to Chaucer, to the Italian poets, to the classical Greek and Roman literary works.
There are many biblical references- like the Story of Adam and Eve, Satan. The poem is full of biblical allusions that are allegorical.
We have reference to the Pope.
This poem is full of knowledge

1st stanza:
LO I the man, whose Muse whilome did maske,
As time her taught, in lowly Shepheards weeds,
Am now enforst a far vnfitter taske,
For trumpets sterne to chaunge mine Oaten reeds,
And sing of Knights and Ladies gentle deeds;
Whose prayses hauing slept in silence long,
Me, all too meane, the sacred Muse areeds
To blazon broad emongst her learned throng:
Fierce warres and faithfull loues shall moralize my song.

Here, Spenser is addressing the readers. He said that he had been used to write to humble simple minds, but now he is asking the muse to help him because he is speaking about great noble ladies. He is asking the muse to help him to write about noble gentlemen and great ladies. He does not want to write humble بسيط- متواضعlines anymore. He wants to celebrate the deeds of the heroes. He wants the muse to inspire يلهم him , tell him with songs of – about these great men and women.
The first line is from Virgil.
For trumpets sterne to chaunge mine Oaten reeds,
It symbolizes heroic poetry
Oaten reeds= the shepherds
He wants to sing musical songs- from the shepherds
And sing of Knights and Ladies gentle deeds

gentle= noble
This is the subject of the first stanza. He is asking the muse to help him of knights and ladies, the noble deeds of knights and ladies
2nd stanza:
Helpe then, ™ holy Virgin chiefe of nine,
Thy weaker Nouice to performe thy will,
Lay forth out of thine euerlasting scryne
The antique rolles, which there lye hidden still,
Of Faerie knights and fairest Tanaquill,
Whom that most noble Briton Prince so long
Sought through the world, and suffered so much ill,
That I must rue his vndeserued wrong:
O helpe thou my weake wit, and sharpen my dull tong.
He is asking Queen Mary= the holy Virgin – for help . He demands the help of holy Virgil. He wants to write a great poem.
O helpe thou my weake wit, and sharpen my dull tong.
He asks for help to sharpen his tongue.

in this stanza, we have some characters Of Faerie knights and fairest Tanaquill.
The fairest Tanaquill of the fairy knights is Gloriana. He is addressing Gloriana. He is introducing Gloriana as the fairest fairy.
Whom that most noble Briton Prince so long
Briton= England
Briton Prince= a native person. He is the native of the land. He refers to Prince Arthur.
What is the mission of Prince Arthur?
Sought through the world, and suffered so much ill,
That I must rue his vndeserued wrong

the prince suffered from the weakness and the trouble of people around him. The quest of Briton Prince- Prince Arthur is to seek through the world and to suffer from the illness around him, from the troubles that surround him.
Una and Red Cross Knight met Error- the monster. The Red Cross defeated him.
Stanza 8 is about the battle between Red Cross Knight and the monster Error how he defeated him. How Una told him about the weakness of the monster and participated يساهمin his victory.
Much daunted with that dint, her sence was dazd,
Yet kindling rage, her selfe she gathered round,
And all attonce her beastly body raizd
With doubled forces high aboue the ground:
Tho wrapping vp her wrethed sterne arownd,
Lept fierce vpon his shield, and her huge traine
All suddenly about his body wound,
That hand or foot to stirre he stroue in vaine:
God helpe the man so wrapt in Errours endlesse traine.
This is the attack of the monster. The monster is attacking the Red Cross Knight. The monster jumped.
wound= turned around .
He is using his tail to squeeze the knight. The monster was stronger than him. The knight was wrappedيلف, surrounded completely.
The monster enveloped يحيط بthe Red Cross Knight with his tail and squeezedيعصر him.
His Lady sad to see his sore constraint,
Cride out, Now now Sir knight, shew what ye bee,
Add faith onto your force, and be not faint:
Strangle her, else she sure will strangle thee.
That when he heard, in great perplexitie,
His gall did grate for griefe and high disdaine,
And knitting all his force got one hand free,
Wherewith he grypt her gorge with so great paine,
That soone to loose her wicked bands did her constraine.

Una is sad to see his bad situation. She is sad to see that the Knight is in a bad situation. She shouted. She is encouraging يشجعthe Knight to fight back.
Cride out, Now now Sir knight, shew what ye bee,

She tells him that he is courageous but he lacks faith ينقصه الايمانin his ability. Una symbolizes the Protestant Church. She is telling the knight that he is powerful. She tells him that this is the moment to show who he is.
Add faith onto your force, and be not faint:
Strangle her, else she sure will strangle thee.

She wants to fight him back.

in great perplexitie= when he is entangled متشابك
disdaine= work
he fought back and released himself.
Una urges the Red Cross Knight to strangle = squeezeيعصر the monster. Una's counsel = advice نصيحةof strength for the Red Cross Knight to have faith and to belief in himself. Add faith onto your force, and be not faint: she said to him that strengthشجاعة, courage and good intentionنية طيبة are not enough. He should add faith إيمانto his power and believe in what he is. Una symbolizes the protestant church. The encounterالمواجهة with the monster suggests the constant problems facing man who aspireيطمح إلى to rightness الصوابbut lacks ينقصه experience .

A monologue is a long speech said by one character to another character on stage. Like for example when a Politian is talking to others, he is the only person talking and the others are listening, then this is a monologue. It is many lines like the soliloquy.

The Aside is when a character is standing on stage talking with the others and then wanted to say a word or a short sentence but is not directed to the actors, so the character turns his head and says the word and the audience is supposed to hear him while the other characters pretend they do not hear him or really they do not hear it. It is called aside because the character turns his head as there are other characters on stage whom he did not speak this aside to them. So, the aside is short all the time, it is either one word or one sentence

That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
Bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sang.
In me thou see'st the twilight of such day
As after sunset fadeth in the west;
Which by and by black night doth take away,
Death's second self, that seals up all in rest.
In me thou see'st the glowing of such fire,
That on the ashes of his youth doth lie,
As the death-bed, whereon it must expire,
Consum'd with that which it was nourish'd by.
This thou perceiv'st, which makes thy love more strong,
To love that well, which thou must leave ere long

The Passionate Shepherd to his Love

Come live with me and be my love,

And we will all the pleasures prove

That valleys, groves, hills and fields,

Woods or steepy mountain yields.

And we will sit upon the rocks, 5

Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks,

By shallow rivers, to whose falls

Melodious birds sing madrigals.

And I will make thee beds of roses

And a thousand fragrant posies; 10

A cap of flowers, and a kirtle

Embroidered all with leaves of myrtle;

A gown made of the finest wool

Which from our pretty lambs we pull;

Fair linèd slippers for the cold, 15

With buckles of the purest gold;

A belt of straw and ivy buds,

With coral clasps and amber studs.

And if these pleasures may thee move,

Come live with me and be my love.

The shepherds’ swains shall dance and sing

For thy delight each May morning.

If these delights thy mind may move,

Then live with me and be my love.

*

When I do count the clock that tells the time,
And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;
When I behold the violet past prime,
And sable curls, all silvered o'er with white;
When lofty trees I see barren of leaves,
Which erst from heat did canopy the herd,
And summer's green all girded up in sheaves,
Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard,
Then of thy beauty do I question make,
That thou among the wastes of time must go,
Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake
And die as fast as they see others grow;
And nothing 'gainst Time's scythe can make defence
Save breed, to brave him when he takes thee hence.

Pastoral" (from pastor, Latin for "shepherd") refers to a literary work dealing with shepherds and rustic life. Pastoral poetry is highly conventionalized; it presents an idealized rather than realistic view of rustic life. Classical (Greek and Latin) pastoral works date back to the 3rd century B.C., when the Greek poet Theocritus wrote his Idylls about the rustic life of Sicily for the sophisticated citizens of the city of Alexandria. In the first century B.C., Virgil wrote Latin poems depicting himself and his equally sophisticated friends and acquaintances as shepherds living a simple, rural life. Shakespeare's knowledge of pastoral conventions was drawn both from his humanist education (http://vle.ud.edu.sa/webapps/blackboard/content/school.html) (which included Virgil and possibly Theocritus) and from his familiarity with the works of contemporaries who imitated the ancients by writing pastoral poetry in English.
Common topics of pastoral poetry include love and seduction; the value of poetry; death and mourning; the corruption of the city or court vs. the "purity" of idealized country life; politics (generally treated satirically: the "shepherds" critique society or easily identifiable political figures). A common pastoral poetic genre is the eclogue (a dialogue between two shepherds). This conversation may be between a shepherd and the shepherdess he loves (generally his attempt to seduce her); a "singing contest" to see which shepherd is the better poet (a third may act as judge); or sophisticated banter between two supposedly "rude swains" who discuss a lady, their flocks, or a current event; lament a dead friend (a eulogy or elegy); or praise a notable individual. .Laudatory poems, laments upon a death, songs of courtship and the complaints of a lovesick shepherd also occur as pastoral monologues.

Couplet
A pair of rhymed lines that may or may not constitute a separate stanza (http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072405228/student_view0/poetic_glossary.html#stanza) in a poem. Shakespeare's sonnets end in rhymed couplets, as in "For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings / That then I scorn to change my state with kings."

Figurative language
A form of language use in which writers and speakers convey something other than the literal meaning of their words. Examples include hyperbole or exaggeration, litotes or understatement, simile and metaphor, which employ comparison, and synecdoche and metonymy, in which a part of a thing stands for the whole.

Metaphor
A comparison between essentially unlike things without an explicitly comparative word such as like or as. An example is "My love is a red, red rose,"

Octave
An eight-line unit, which may constitute a stanza (http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072405228/student_view0/poetic_glossary.html#stanza); or a section of a poem, as in the octave of a sonnet (http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072405228/student_view0/poetic_glossary.html#sonnet)

Sestet
A six-line unit of verse constituting a stanza (http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072405228/student_view0/poetic_glossary.html#stanza) or section of a poem; the last six lines of an Italian sonnet (http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072405228/student_view0/poetic_glossary.html#sonnet). Examples: Petrarch's "If it is not love, then what is it that I feel," and Frost's "Design."

What does the speaker compare himself to?
•Sonnet 73 contains three distinct metaphors for the poet’s progressive aging.

1.The first of these is the implied comparison between his state and the time of year when a few yellow leaves, or none at all, remain on boughs shaking in the cold winds, deserted by the birds that usually inhabit them. One might be tempted to compare this directly with graying and loss of hair, but it is more probably to be taken generally as a reference to the aging process.
2.The second quatrain moves from the time of year to the time of day. Again there is a metaphor: The poet’s likeness is that of a day fading in the west after sunset. Instead of the yellow of the first quatrain, there is the black of night’s approach, a more sinister prospect. There follows a personification within the metaphor, naming night as death’s second self, in essence creating a new metaphor within the first as it envisions night, which “seals up all in rest.” The word “seals” suggests the permanent closing of a coffin lid, providing a finality that is only slightly relieved by the knowledge that the reader is actually seeing not death, but night.
3.The third metaphor involves a complex process rather than a simple period of time. The afterglow of a fire gradually being choked by the ashes of its earlier burning becomes the description of Shakespeare’s aging.
4.The concluding couplet moves from metaphor to direct statement, summarizing the purpose of the poet in revealing so frankly his approaching old age. After the richness of the preceding lines, it might appear almost anticlimactic, yet it is important to the structure of the form, lending finality to the whole.

Sir Philip Sidney composed Astrophil and Stella between 1581 and 1583, most likely in the summer of 1582. A sequence of 108 sonnets and eleven songs, it is an important work in the history of English poetry for several reasons.:

•The work remains one of the best examples of its type. It plumbs the psychology of the lover, Astrophil (“star-lover”), as he contemplates the beautiful Stella (“star”), who marries another man and gives little encouragement to Astrophil because of her need to guard her reputation.
•Stella is, in a number of respects, the conventional heroine of medieval and Renaissance love poetry, but she boasts, in addition to her blonde hair, fair skin, and rosy cheeks, unconventional black eyes, as did Penelope. In several of the poems, Sidney makes pointed allusions to her “rich” husband.
•A memorable element of the Astrophil and Stella sonnets is the striking physical description of Stella. Not that description itself is unusual; the “vertical description” of the beloved, from head to toe, is a hallmark of the Petrarchan sonnet tradition. What is unusual is Sidney’s departure from the Petrarchan cliché of the blue-eyed blonde as the feminine ideal to that of a dark beauty.
•The sonnet sequence is not a novel and cannot be thought of as demonstrating a plot; rather, Sidney presents a series of emotional crises, internal—and occasionally external—conflicts, and solitary musings on the course of a love affair that is destined to remain unconsummated. Soon it occurs to Astrophil that he should be pursuing virtue and not mere earthly beauty, but he continues to concentrate, sometimes defiantly, on the latter, while at other times he justifies his course with logic-chopping mental exercises. He vows to revert to virtue, but the mere sight of Stella challenges his determination. Another problem is Stella’s coldness; her heart is a “citadel” [immune] against him, presumably because a rival already “enjoys” her. (Although Sidney may have known Penelope Devereux before her marriage, it appears unlikely that there was then any opportunity for intimacy between them.) Astrophil hesitates between regarding Stella as the essence of virtue and wondering whether her scorn should be interpreted as mere ungratefulness to a passionately devoted lover.
•Anxious to please Stella, the speaker decides to send her poetry but cannot decide how to go about writing any. “

:biggrin:

1-detention essay
2-compare and contrast essay
3-argument essay
1-detention essay

2-compare or contrast essay
3-argument essay
